Noisy Engine
I just put a Tower Hobbies .46ABC on my Seamaster to replace a 15yr. old SuperTigre. I went with the Tower because of the price. The engine runs and starts just fine and seems to have good power but it's quite a lot louder than the OS that's on my Ultra Stick. Noise isn't a problem when flying off the water, but at our flying site it is. I've never used anything but stock mufflers. Anybody got recommendations for an aftermarket muffler? Once I put an after market muffler on that cheap engine I might as well have bought the OS .46.

RE: Noisy Engine
Try a different make/style prop. You don't say what brand/style prop you are presently using, but I have found that a Master Airscrew prop (the black one ) is noisier and not as efficient as an APC. When I switched from a MAS to an APC my db level dropped several points since the APC doesn't flex as much and the style doesn't "beat up" the air as much.
If you do not have a baffle in the muffler, try an OS muffler with the baffle in place. While it will reduce your power a little, it will quiet the motor. Another thing you can try is an exhaust deflector. This will also reduce your power a little, but will also help to reduce the noise. I would try the APC prop first, then go from there. FWIW - Seal the backplate and the carb o-ring with some silicone. Tower 46 engines are well known for their air leaks so that the engine will not shut off right away with the transmitter (takes ABOUT 15 - 45 seconds for the engine to die ). Hope this helps. |
RE: Noisy Engine
I am using the APC prop, the same one that was on the SuperTigre.
The noise really sounds like hollow muffler. I will try moving the muffler from the OS to the Tower and see if that makes a difference. The engine only has about three tanks through it, and I did notice that it doesn't shut off as quickly as the OS. even with the throttle completely closed, I will do the silicone thing and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the reply. |
RE: Noisy Engine
Sorry about your noise problem, but I have a couple of those engines and the tower muffler is noisy! I use that muffler on OS, Magnums and others that it will fit and it really boost power, similar to a Nelson short pipe, but at a noise premium. If you put a different muffler on the engine, it will not have that awesome power, but will be quieter. The magnum .46 and .52 mufflers will bolt right up to the tower, are the same specs as an OS .46/.50 muffler, but less costly. The Tower engines are a great buy at $75.00 each, but the OS's, Magnums, Thunder Tigers are quieter. The SuperTigre .52 is one of the quietest and less expensive of them all. You may want to try it and sell your Tower to some of the hot rodders or sport flyers where noise is not as much an issue.

RE: Noisy Engine
Check out the Fly Quiet pipes. I don't have one, but I talked to a guy at the field one time who had one and it did seem to be much quieter.
