Have you seen this new remake?

The little dorky guy in the movie - the one who has everyone say "Please" - turns out he designs model airplanes, instead of full-scale.

I don't remember that part in the original movie - of course I wasn't into model airplanes then.

That scene in the movie where the Phoenix is just completed.....during the ensuing fight, the wind starts to blow hard and the airplane starts to lift off the ground.......damned if I didn't have a tear or two on my face. :)

Only something us "builders" can appreciate. Its trully a moving scene.

Yes, the original movie had an Aeronautical engineering who designed planes. However, it was not known it was models until later, everyone assumed
he designed Full Scale-

If I recall correctly, someone complained that they were taking instruction from a toy plane builder. The aeronautical engineer infromed hin that toy airplanes roll on the ground, the planes he builds fly. This was in the original, I haven't gotten to see the new one yet.

In the original he also mentioned they had to fly without assistance, unlike a full scale with a pilot available to make corrections.[X(]

In the original, Tallmantz Aviation did the flying for the movie (Frank Tallman, Paul Mantz). Paul Mantz was killed flying the Phoenix.

I loved the first movie. now I know for sure I need to buy the dvd. I enjoyed it then, now you all brought back memories of
things said in the movie.

Best buy, here I come !!;)

I've been wondering how the re-make is. The original was a great movie, and I'm afraid they really louse the story up for the remake.

I agree Dennis, but then, I thought "The Producers" was going to stink cause I liked the original movie so much, but it turned out to be the best Broadway Show I ever saw.

As I recall, the original movie used a C-82, the earlier version of the Flying Boxcar. They actually built the single engine plane from the parts and flew it. After shooting was complete, they decided they needed a couple of more aircraft shots. This was when Paul Mantz was killed. It was to have been his last movie before retiring. I seem to recall the modeler was a German free flight designer.

His line was something like, "model planes have to be designed well enough to fly without pilots"...meaning James Stewart. I saw the movie again a couple of years ago. I also read the book a long time ago, and I think that the movie went along exactly as the book. Isn't there a female in the remake? Weren't no females in the book or original movie....but there was the monkey.

There is a female, she is the leader of the oil group.

I cannot remember a monkey in the remake - must have gotten rid of that part.

As my memory serves me, the re-make is almost identical to the original.

Let's see, no monkey like the original, remake has a woman in it - not in the original, "oil group"? Don't remember one in the original, just some 'nomad type desert dwellers', different aircraft?....

"Almost identical to the original", sounds like you have half-zeimers to me bryris. :D;)

Well, no monkey kind of spoils things a bit. Didn't Jimmy Stewart have a cigar in his mouth half the time? I seem to remember that and I bet they don't show it in the remake.

Don't tell me that the British Captain and his faithful Sergeant are missing too.

Havent seen the new one yet but liked the old one. See the Aviator it was very good

I saw the new one last night - saw the original when it first hit the screens back in the sixties when I was about 10 years old. I have mixed feelings about the new version. It is fairly well done and keeps to the original storyline for the most part with just a few modern updates to relate to todays audiences. I have not seen the original since the sixties and perhaps if I did, I could definitely say which one is better, however, I think the big difference is the list and quality of the actors. There are no Jimmy Stewarts, Richard Attenboroughs, Peter Finch's and Ernest Borgnine's in the remake. All this being said, the new version is good entertainment and I would recommend seeing the movie. My Wife and kids did enjoy it - they were at the edge of their seats at times. I knew what was going to happen (same as the old movie) so I did not feel quite the same way.
