Starter Problems.
 

I hope someone can help me here.
I have an old Sullivan Hi-Torque starter, that has served me well for many years.
This last spring, I replaced my 12V 7MAH field battery, and have really had no problems starting my smaller 40-60 sized engines.

Well I have a new YS 110, and it wont turn her over.

So I went and bought a new Hobbico 90.

Same problem..not enough torque. (Oh the store owner told me it would turn over a 140 with no problem...)

As a matter of fact the old sullivan seems stronger.

So just to be safe, I went out and bought a new 12 volt battery and a new Hobbico charger (wall wart) for it.

Still not enough to spin her over.

Help...I've already spent enough..and gotten nowhere..


And since I installed banana plugs on the hobbico..I can't return it...NICE!!!!!!!!

My little hand held Kavan starter spins my YS 110's over with ease:

In fact, this starter can turn over a YS 140 without any difficulty.

I had the same problem. Old Sullivan Hi-Torque (25 years) and it stopped turning over a new Magnum 160 FS Twin so I bought a new Geared starter, No problem.

Have had the Kavan for many yrs. Starts my friends obstinate Zenoah G23 with no problems.

I'm sure you are, but is the engine turned backward until it bumps compression before you apply the starter?

Stick Jammer, my words exactly. The other thing you can try is to make sure your 12v battery is actually fully charged. It should be around 12.8 to 13.1 volts to be fully charged. If it only measures 12.2 or 12.4 fully charged, then that may be your problem.

The problem is your battery!
7Amp:s is a little low....I do recommend at a least a 12V, 10 or 12A battery.

Keep in mind that Amps has nothing to do with torque and power. Amp is just capacity. The little Kavan starter uses only a 1400mAh battery pack. Output voltage is what you are looking for. You don't need a 10 or 12A battery because I can start my YS 110's on a 7A battery just fine.

Miller has a reduction gear that can be fitted to the Sullivan starter for higher torque. Unfortunately I can't find their contact details in my records. Do a search here and you'll probably find them.

Put 24 volts to that Sullivan starter and it will start a Mack truck. I know 2 batteries are heavy but not flying isn't fun eaither.

I'll second the advice to get the Kavan, an excellent starter for even the smaller gassers. However, any resistance in the wiring can bog down any brand starter. Make sure you are using heavy duty leads with very good connectors. A poorly crimped connection, a dirty connector or poorly soldered connector can really cost you lots of starting power.

You're usually right on but I have to disagree with this statement. Try starting your car with a 12 volt lawn tractor battery. It's still the same voltage but won't likely have near enough cranking amps to turn the engine over.

I have that same starter. In fact, I have #6. It's a compact 3:1 gear reduction starter that comes with twin 7.2V 3000mAh battery pack, giving it 14.4 volts. The starter body itself is even smaller than the Kavan starter body. However, this starter can turn over my Saito 150 with ease whereas the Kavan struggles in doing so:

Well, using a 4.8V 5000mAh receiver battery pack in your plane won't make your servos put out higher torque. This battery pack only gives you longer flight time.

Totally different situation. The servo will only draw so many amps with a load applied. Supplying more amps than it can possibly draw does nothing except give you longer flight time as you've stated. A starter motor is another story. If it needs more amps under a given load than the battery can supply, it won't be able to do the job. Based on what you are thinking, you should be able to start your car with the same 12 volt battery you use to start your model engines. That ain't gonna happen.

Well...I charged the new battery @ 16 hours...

All's well with the world again...

Either I got a bad battery last summer or my charger went bad at some point.

New stuff is working fine now...

I will say that my old Sullivan high torque is a more powerful starter than the Hobbico 90

No comparison.

More torque, and spins the props faster as well...

I made a special trip to the LHS and bought it a new rubber cone insert as tribute..


I'm sending the battery to the recyclers tomorrow, and the charger in the trash...
