wanted, cheap flat working surface

The way I see it, in order to build nice straight wings and fuses one needs a good flat working surface.

I've heard of guys using hollow core doors and such and wanted to see what you guys use.

I won't tell you that I just finished building the wing panels of a Sig Astro Hog and ruined them by building on surface I mistakenly thought was flat. Boy if you ever want to test the flatness of a surface and find every little hickup, valley and irregularity, build on what I used: a 4 foot Great Planes building board thrown on top of my ancient workbench.

I'm ordering a wing kit today.

Flummoxed in Fresno ...

decombs21,
you've already answered your own question. Get a hollow core door. Mine is 8' x 2'6", I bought it at Lowe's, and it only cost $15. It's nice and flat and I can push pins into it while building. IMHO you can't do much better for the money.

i've used the door, but when i needed something bigger and totaly flat, i went and spent 45 bucks on a piece of 1 1/4" osb from menard's. totaly flat and does not bend at all. watch picking it up though, it'll throw your back out!

here's some pics. hopefully the right ones.....the edge of the osb is that gray color. in the pics i was gluing the balsa skins to the foam core fuse. took my door and put it on top so i could put the weights on. when i started my wings, i just laid a piece of 1 inch pink foam board on top.

I got the door at HD for $12. I used my old folding legs and scrap wood from HD to make leg mounts and now I made my own table for about $18.
