Needle lengthening for cowl

Hi,

My engine resides in the cowl, and I want access to the needle valve.
I asked some people and they showed me how to insert a piano wire to the hole in the needle, and tighten the ellen screw on it.

Now, I'm sorry for the newbie question..

My problem - if I make it long enough to stick out of the cowl, I wouldn't be able to put the cowl on...
If I make it shorter - I won't have access to it from outside the cowl :-(

Thanks.

Make the hole just large enough for the whole needle assy to go through, put your cowl on then screw the needle assy in :D.

Or do what I did and take a dremel cutting wheel and make straight slot screw driver slots in the end of the needle valve. Drill a small hole and stick a screw driver in to make adjustments.

I just tweak it in pretty good without the cowl till I'm happy then cowl it up and tweak with a screw driver.

Here is a cool solution that I used.

Put a lenth of hose over the needle valve thumb srew area and have the hose extend to the outside of the cowl and turn that and all is well in the world.

You can also use the wire that you suggested but it is a pain to set up sometimes.

A steel cable and a wheel collar works for me. Most needle valve have a set screw in the end, you can find stiff flex cable at most auto supply stores or a Motor Cycle shop. Keeps you fingers out of the prop:eek:[:o] You can put it where ever you want as long as you don't make it too long.

Take a 2-56 socket head screw, cut it to length where it sits just inside the cowl, file a flat on the end, insert it into the needle adjuster, and tighten the little lock screw. Then you can put the cowl on without any trouble, and use a small hex driver to adjust your needle (I use a long handled ball-tip, so you can increase the distance between your adjusting hand and the prop.)
