Odorless CA
Morning Folks,
How well do the odorless CA's perform? Everytime I use the standard CA and CA+'s I develop sinus attacks the following day. Anyone else experience this? Will the odorless CA's minimize the sinus problems and do they set up and hold as well as the regular CA's? I've tried using a small fan blowing across the building board and wearing a dust filter type of mask. My sinuses will sure thank ya'll for any help you throw my way. ED |
Odorless CA
Good Morning Ed:
I also experience a severe reaction to CA fumes. I switched to odorless CA several years ago. IMHO it works as well as regular CA, without the discomfort! Some will disagree, but who ever heard of differing opinions in our hobby? The added expense is a non issue, if you experience a severe reaction to regular CA. Even with the odorless stuff I try to have plenty of ventilation and use a fan. I have a new respirator, which I have yet to test with regular CA. I sure cuts down on the balsa dust that you inhale during sanding. I have started using a lot of "yellow carpenters glue" in place of CA. It takes a little longer, and you have to modify your building techniques, but the stuff builds light and strong. Some of the best is "Old Yeller Quickset" from Woodworkers Supply in Casper, WY. Use caution while using regular CA. Use the fan and have plenty of ventilation. The stuff is pure poison! Anything with cyanide in it can't be good to inhale. They used to use a form of cyanide in the gas chambers. |

The first time I realized that I had allergic reactions to CA, I was sick for six months. Strained all the muscles in my neck, shoulders and chest from sneezing, sneezing, sneezing........
If you decide to continue to use regular CA, use a mask fitted with ORGANIC VAPOR filters, they are the pink and yellow marked filters. I use my mask ALWAYS and I get by pretty well. Jeff |

Thanks Folks,
I'll give the odorless a try. Are these respirators and filters availble at hardware stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot? ED |

Sneezing and sinus congestion are the low end of the effects of regular CA if you are alleric to it. After many years without any problems, suddenly developed asthmatic bronchitis every time I got even a whiff. A few inquiries revealed even more serious effects are possible..heart arythmia for one. I switched to odorless with mixed results, some are good and some not so good. The best I have found so far is B&B Super Gold. It sets up a little slower than regular (like every odorless I have tried), but seems to work just as well. One drawback to the odorless stuff is limited shelf life. When not actively building, I throw mine in the freezer and have had no problems for well over a year. You have to let it warm up to room temp before using it to get good results, however. And I use aliphatic whenever possible just to stay on the safe side.
Good gluing! |

Intruder38,
I'll definitely be going to the odorless. It's better than the Ambroid I used to use. I have enough heart problems every time I fly. Thanks for the advise, I'll take it to heart. (pun intended) ED |

John,
Just got back from Home Depot and their cost was a very reasonable $27.00. Replacement Organic vapor filters are $17.00. How long will these filters last, with proper care? ED |
Odorless CA
ED,
I only wear my mask when using CA,and I've still got the same filters in,so don't have an answer. |
Odorless CA
How long do the filters last..........
Well there is not really a straight forward answer. First of all, if you just open them and let them sit on a shelf, there are good for 1 yr. Then you start breathing through it intentionally drawing air through it.........Best thing to do is make sure you store it in a large ZIPLOC bag and only use it when neccessary. There is only one problem, if you use the glue in your shop during the winter and keep your shop closed up, you should wear it ALL THE TIME.....the fumes linger. |
