Setting up flaperons...
I'm trying to setup flaperons with a Futaba 6EXAP. But the flaperons move 45 degrees in both directions. Why would you want the "flaps" to point up and down? Don't I just want it neutral and down? What would you want the flaps in the up position? What am I doing wrong?

RE: Setting up flaperons...
Im not familiar with your Tx, but first, what is your model and why do you need a flap function? Remember that dropping the ailerons will increase the chance of a tip stall. On simple models like elec gliders etc only fitted with ailerons I often use 'up' ail to form a "spoileron", reducing lift to get the thing down, also less chanc eof a tip stall at low altitude.

RE: Setting up flaperons...
Flaperons are a combination of flaps AND ailerons. You have the flap feature, but they also work as ailerons, so they will go up and down even with the flaps engaged.
Unless you have full length strip type ailerons DON'T DO IT. With flaperons you have a substantially higher chance of tip stalling, even with full length strip ailerons. If this is a new build, I suggest splitting the aileron and have separate ailerons and flaps. Another thing is, what type of plane ? MOST planes, with the exception of warbirds (and not all of them) and high wing loading planes do not need flaps. If your wing loading is under 25 oz, you most likely do not need them. 25 0z - 30 oz can go either way. Over 30 oz put flaps on. |
RE: Setting up flaperons...
The plane is 7 1/2 pounds with 768 sq in of wing area.

RE: Setting up flaperons...
Oh and I know they will go up and down because they are ailerons, but the go up and down as flaps too. On one end of the dial its both ailerons 45 up and its 45 down at the other end of the dial.

My intent was to use the flaperons if I come in too fast and I've already killed the engine.

RE: Setting up flaperons...
You have the dial set up with the middle as the center point. That's handy if you want the ailerons to act as either flaperons or speed brakes. If you want flaperons only then have the center point set up at whichever end of the dial you want to use as the starting point for the flaperons.

Flaperons are interesting to experiment with. Bill |
