Dope and Silk Covering questions

Hi. I'm in the process of silk covering and doping my 1/6 Sig Cub (just finished kit). This morning I covered and applied the first hand of thinned butyrate dope to the left wing. it went without a hitch. However, when i did the same to the right wing, the dope created a sort of white hazel on the covering. First wing doped look very good, the other looks so-so. I'm wondering why this happened if I'm using same dope and thinner. Is this hazel going to disappear? If not, it will be still noticed once the wing is painted? At this point I'm afraid to apply a second hand of dope to the left wing. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

RE: Dope and Silk Covering questions

The humidity went up. That's the moisture in the air trapped in the finish. Give it a couple of days to dry completely, put a dehumidifiyer in your paint area and go on to the next coats.

Any time dope hazes, you can get rid of it with another coat. That is, if you do the next coat on a dry day. And sometimes the next coat needs to have a lot of thinner in it. Sometimes you'll have to resort to brushing on straight thinner.

Guys who did quite a bit of painting with dope who lived in humid areas often used retarder in the dope. It slows the drying time so the moisture isn't trapped. It also helps the gloss.

avionette- You should start a new thread when you are asking a question that is different than the one that started the thread. That helps to keep readers from getting confused trying to figure out which answers go with which questions.
