Polyester Resin - Where to buy

Building a kit with a Polyester fiberglass fuselage. Polyester Resin is recommended for some additional glasswork. Who makes Polyester Resin ? Any alternatives ? Thanks. Bob

Polyester resin likes to bond to itself. Mixing with other types involves shrinkage factors. Which is why Bondo only works for a while.

Just wash area down with strong solvent before laminating, and then don't touch it. It is much cheaper than epoxy or mix 'em types. I get mine at local plastics place (see telephone yellow pages) for about $8 per quart, or $30 per gallon, used to be $3 per quart back when. Some house paint stores handle it, boat repair places, and a few of the old timey auto paint stores. I think the modern Pep Boys type auto parts places now handle the Epoxy stuff predominantely. Problem being is that with resin you have to be ready to go, not mix up, do your sanding and cleaning and then apply. Resin takes off much faster as you probably know.

BalsaBob--Home Depot also carries a small size (pint and quart) polyester kit. More than enough for glassing in formers, strengthening gear, servo, and engine mount areas, etc.

I have found that Napa Brand Polyester Resin to work better than most brands. It is availanle at any Napa.
I thin it with MEK to insure a good bond.
It wicks into the glass easier than other brands.
It is the only brand I use anymore. I use it for full scale glass repairs too!
It is a little more expensive than Bondo brand.
However, Epoxy will cure over polyester. Polyester applied over epoxy will not cure.
When strength is my primary concern, I only use West System Epoxies.

Thanks for the info guys ..... I picked up a quart at a local boat supply store. I noticed it is thicker than most epoxies .... what is best for thinning it for glass cloth applications. thanks. Bob
