Differences in engines?

I've seen a lot of talk about what engine to put into which plane, and I have a pretty good grasp as to what needs to be where, but here's my question. What is the difference in engines? For example: The O.S. 40LA. What's the difference between that and a O.S.40FX? Or a ringed vs. non ringed engine. I know how the bushing and BB engines differ, but can someone help me with the rest?

Thanks,
Ben

An LA engine is lighter, cheaper, easier to adjust, has better throttle response and better fuel draw. The FX engines are heavier, more costly and much more powerful. As the FX engines have ball bearings you must take care not to leave any fuel residue in the bearings after a flight. If you are a beginner start with a simple LA type engine.

I would say the decision would be based more on available funds than on experience. A BB engine is far superior to a bushing engine, they are not any harder to tune. and in 40+ years of flying without ever using "after run" oil I have only changed the bearings in one engine (and it was a simple task if you're mechanically inclined).
So if, for example, you were looking at an OS LA40, at $58, I would suggest spending an extra $17 and getting the Thunder Tiger Pro 40BB at $75. Or better yet, spring another $2 and get the TT Pro 46 BB (All are Tower Prices).

Thanks for the replies!

MinnFlyer, why do you always seem to answer EVERY one of my questions. Everytime I post, and check back the next day, your name is always in there! I appreciate it!

Money really isnt an issue, I mean well it is, but I want to get a quality engine that I can use in other planes.
