Is this fuelproof?
I have some "Varathane diamond wood finish" water-based varnish, does anyone know if this is suitable for clearcoating?
Thanks Richard |
RE: Is this fuelproof?
Water based? Doubt it. May be fuel resistant, but I wouldn't trust it to be 100% fuel proof until you test it.

RE: Is this fuelproof?
Not nearly as fuelproof as he mineral based varathane; water base is not as yellow. Both must cure for several weeks before testing.

RE: Is this fuelproof?
Waterbase polyurethanes are fuel resistant WITH THE FOLLOWING CAVEATS:
1. Let the poly dry for a MINIMUM of 7 days before exposing to exhaust residue. 2. Do not let the residue remain on the finish for longer than 4 hours. After 4 hours the poly begins to soften. |

I tested with 15% nitro over a period of several weeks. Campy, what level nitro do you use?

RE: Is this fuelproof?
I've used this Varathane for many years, both as a fuel proof coat over paints and for laying up glass fiber. Fuel I use is 10 - 30% nitro and I have never had any type of problem. I have several planes treated this way that are now about 7 plus yrs old and still going strong.
Once when I couldn't get 'Varathane' I used Minwax Polycrylic and that was a disaster - but that's another story. |
