Balsa Rite
I've used Balsarite previously and it was the consistency of water. I just opened a can I recently purchased (for fabric application) the this stuff is thick, about the consistency of honey. Is this correct or should it be thinned and if so what can be used for thinner? Thanks in advance for any insight. |
RE: Balsa Rite
I was told my my Local Hobby Shop that the thicker material is the only one now available. I thinned it with acetone.

And using it straight from the can is a disaster. Trust me on this one.

RE: Balsa Rite
It should be the consistency of honey. I have never used it thinned so can not help you with that, I have always used it straight from the can with good results.

RE: Balsa Rite
I have always used it from the can, but it was only half the consistency of honey. I'd say thin it down a bit with Acetone

RE: Balsa Rite
If you use it straight you will end up with lumps of the stuff in places after you brush it on. When you cover it will turn into a gum under the covering and remain visible. Thin the stuff. It works a lot better if it's slightly more viscous than water. Another substance that does a good job at sticking covering is clear dope. It's almost impossible to get Balsa Rite in California due to an idiotic materials substance law the voters stupidly enacted a few years back. Good auto paints are also hard to get in most of the state.

RE: Balsa Rite
An alternative adhesive is BalsaLoc which is safe to handle and is available from Hobby-Lobby.
