Field box?
 

Im in the market for a field box.I wanted to hear from some of you as far as how happy or unhappy you are with yours.Im considering the commercial ones that are either assembled or kit form. I recently saw a Sig Field Boss assembled and it looked too big for me.

I have a Kyosho that is just about right - for me. I like metal gallon "tins" of glow fuel (a traditionalist) and it holds them perfectly. I rigged a long shanked allen wrench to hold the drawer closed and serve as a semi-secret lock and prevent accidental tool drops.

Nice bright red so gawkers are less likely to trip over it on the flight line.

OK here goes my rant.
I picked up the Tower hobbie Ultimate tote box as a kit.
It SUCKED.
No decals or anything. All the wood was warped and I trashed it.
They sent me a pre built tote box and construction is poor.
Nothing inside is coated and I had to coat the inside and glue the drawer dividers.
I offered it here for the cost of shipping.
Also the hole for the power panel had to be cut larger.
I like the SIG BOSS but the power meter is mounted on the flat side.
The box (kit) I trashed I took back out of the dumpster and soaked and straightened all the wood, stained it and made the box and power section as one unit.
Below is the finished product.
Came out 100% better then the pre built box.
Nothing like rolling your own.
If your going to buy then go for the sig as I feel it nice and the price is right.

I just ordered one of these and think it will serve me very well into the future.

It may be overkill, but I was never really happy with the smaller commercial boxes out there.

I am thinking of getting one of these new plastic one they look very sturdy and made quite well but they are a little pricey! Also seen new T.T. box but don't like the thought of transferring fuel into it.

I was going to go with the plastic type but this past weekend I saw a guy with one and he spent more time digging and looking for a glow plug.

Its a new field box that looks kind of like a suitcase and I thought it was made by thunder tiger but i may be wrong.

I kind of like the way mine came out and now with some other added features it carries everything I need.
Just something about the wood I like:)

I think what you choose has to do with what works best for where you fly.

Most guys I fly with have something like this tool box with wheels. They bought them because it was a long haul from the parking lot to where we fly (we have moved from that spot). I have a Hangar 9 wood box and its perfect for me (I only carry necessities to the prep area). Everything else stays in my car until I need it, but then again, the parking lot is very close to where we fly..

I finally decided on a field box.I picked up the prebuilt Great Planes Master Caddy.It's nice, Especially the detachable power unit. The only thing that i had to do was enlarge the opening for the power panel.No big deal. This box should be just fine.

hi, i dont want to take business away from the distributers of field boxes, but the best field box that i have used is oone that i made to hold all my stuff. It turned out to be 2 pieces of wood about 5/8 inch thick with my fuel and a battery on it. It works great. I would say that if you cant find one then you should build one

Not a bad looking box but much for me.
If I need mor then what I have in it now then problems that can't be repared at the flight area.

1.props.
2.all the Great Planes hardware.
3.2 spare servos.
4.Electric pump and a hand pump for a back up.
5.Hex head sets both standard and metric.
6.The usual small tools I have wrapped in light canvas.
7.Fuel.
8.Spare lock nuts for the prop.
9.7 Amp battery.
10 Electric starter
11.Spare glow plugs.
12.Spare rubber bands.
13.Windex and paper towels
14.A small plastic box with fuel fittings,filters,and nylon and metal straps.
First aid kit.

Anyone have any suggestions??

Not a bad tote box but the one they sent me had no fuel sealer at all on any part of the inside.
The drawer dividers were not glued to the bottom.
Use some Elmers glue then use a good sealer and let the wood soak it up.
Usually three coats will do and you have a nice gloss.
The white they use on the outside seems to be some sort of epoxy paint.
There is no power meter I know of that will fit the hole.
Seal it good and it will last forever:)

From what you described that Ultimate Field Box will be just right for you, plus its hard to beat at $30 (its much smaller than the metal tool boxes around).

Like I stated, I have the Hangar 9 tote box (bought it new for $10). I usually only carry the items necessary to get airborne and leave everything else in my car (read thats about half of what you carry).

Go check it out at Home Depot and see...

Nothing wrong with the Hanger-9 tote box.
I have to admit mine is loaded and a bit heavy but I fly off a farm.
I can drive my wagon to my small strip and just leave the box in the rear of the wagon.
Just nice to know that box can hold so much.
If I had to buy what I have invested in that box i'm looking at close to $400.00.
My wagon has a very deep compartent in the rear.
If I make a flat top cover for that tote boc I can lay it down then lock it and it's out of sight.

At the other end of the spectrum from Mr. Hell's B&D box:
I've been pleased with the field box kit from Sidewalk Flyers -- quality materials and a well thought-out design. It *is* on the large end, I'll admit. But does have a detachable power unit so you don't have to haul all your tools to the flightline to start your engine. If you're into a little carpentry, this might meet your needs.

Stock # LXW993. I have a Dave Brown metal fuel can with the feed & vent tubes pre-soldered in place. I'm very happy with both.
