Crashed Battery, Question
 

Hello,

I just crashed my new Hanger 9 Twist 60 yesterday and everything but the receiver and 6V 2000 MaH Battery pack were ruined. I am sending the receiver in to have it checked over for internal damage. My question is if the battery is still together and working will it be OK to use it. It charges and it works the receiver and moves the servos. It did have a little tear in the outer plastic covering that holds all the batteries together so I scotch taped it back so it wouldn't get any worse. I just don't want to put it in my newly ordered Hanger 9 Twist 150 and find out that it is bad when it's to late.

What do you think?

You can tell a lot about the battery by cycling it. Does it take a good charge, does it discharge OK and the right amount (at least 80% of the initial rating)and does it do this without excessive heat build up. Also, when you are testing it on the meter, tap it a few times to make sure there are no "drops" in current flow.

I am discharging it now on my Accu Cycle charger. It automatically goes to the charge mode after it is discharged. I will be sleeping when it goes from discharge to charge I think so how will I know if it discharged properly? Does the meter on the charger indicate how much it is charged with the rating switch in the Mah position? Or do I need a seperate meter and where can I get one? I just got the charger and can't find the instructions. The battery is a 6V 200MaH NiMH. If this makes any difference. Maybe I should just buy a new battery. What do you think I should do? Sorry for all the questions and sounding so dumb!:eek:

Jim,

I did what you said and now the meter on the charger shows 1683 out of 2000. That is 83 Mah over the 80%. Tapping it did not change anything. Also it is cool to the touch. What do you think? Should I use it?

the one thing that no one mentioned here is an expanded scale volt meter or any voltmeter that puts a load on the battery pack...that way you'll have an idea what will happen when the battery is supplying power to your airpllane..sounds like your ok though

Also, try cycling it again. Sometimes doing it more than once in a short time brings them back even more.

You are showing at 84% of total capacity, which is probably normal for a battery that has been in use for a season or more. You did start the discharge with a fully charged battery, right? As da Rock suggested, giving it a second cycling may restore it a little more, also. But, you do seem to have a useable battery. I would keep a close watch on it, as it is nearing the limit for "retirement".
