What plane do you think are the top three best second planes. :D :D :D they can be arfs or kits. I don't care, all planes work!! :cool:

Ok, here's my 2 cents worth...

1. Goldberg Tiger II
2. Ugly Stik (or Big Stik, Ultra Stik, etc. by EVERYBODY)
3. Sig 4-Star 40

There is a LOT of discussion here on RCU about second planes, maybe more than about first planes. I always tell my students to keep flying your trainer until you are completely sick of it, then go to your second.

Adding to what ho2zoo said I would consider that big trainer Tower Hobbie has
It flies good with the 46 LX engine and if you want to go flying with someone who has very little air time they can fly and crash yours :D
Just kidding.
But it's a thought.
I just love that big trainer :)

Here's one not many people consider. A Top Flite Contender. It flies nearly like a trainer and is aerobatic as heck!

My 2 cents:

I took my time looking for my 2nd plane (4 months w/limited budget). My choices came down to a Somethin Extra, Pizazz, 4* 40, Magic Extra, Ultra Stick. The Somethin Extra and Ultra Stick were neck to neck in 1st place; then I read about the Global Freestyle (mainly b/c I wanted to get into Pattern flying). I decided to go w/the Freestyle....I'm glad I did.

fyi-I had a chance to fly all of those planes except the Freestyle; the Freestyle, w/ys 63 and reduced rates (60% of normal), outperforms all of them. The SE, w/46 on normal rates, is a close second in 3d/fun flying (except knife edge); the Ultra Stick, w/46 and crow setup, is a close second in general flying (except for slow flight characteristics (yes even in crow setup)). The Pizazz, w/61, ailerons mixed with elevator, and tail heavy, is not as responsive. The Freestyle flys better in wind (flys like a 60/90 size plane), and lands better than all above.

I believe it makes a good 2nd/3rd plane.

BTW-check out the review on the main page. I have similar results.

1) CG Tiger II (or Jr. Tiger, or Tiger 40, Tiger 60, etc)
2) Thunder Tiger Lazy Tiger P-51
3) H9 Ultrastick 40, 60, 120

All would make excellent second airplanes. It is really hard to beat the CG Tiger series -- they are truly EXCELLENT airplanes that will carry you into some advanced aerobatics. You really only need to look further once you've surpassed it's capabilities.

I agree with most of the planes posted, but each one of them depends on how well you have mastered your trainer.

PS: Tigers are my personal choice.

What is your first plane?

Assuming it's a 40-sized trainer, i'd say a midwest sweet stick if you can get your hands on a set of plans. very easy to build and they fly great. still has trike gear and would use the same 40 from your trainer. :-)

Contender would be a great follow up to the sweet stick and let you move up to a 60 sized engine.

Yes you did! Be careful to keep the tail end of the fuse straight during construction.

Get your instructor on the buddy box with you for the first flight. It's not that the Tiger is hard to fly -- it flys great. But it's just going to "feel" weird flying your first low winger.

Let him buddy box that maiden flight with you and then you should be good to go on your own. :)

I agree with Brian....I got help with my Tiger 2 on the first flight....it's MUCH more responsive then your trainer, but still very stable and easy to fly.

OH MAN......thats the part that always gives me trouble. I dont think I have had any tail feathers come out perfect except for my Eaglet (20 years ago).
And why is it that all my "right" wing panels come out heavier then the left?

Make all your measurements and weighing as you go along.
When you run into a problem then correct it before you go any farther on the constrruction

I had a similar experience with one wing quite a bit heavier than the other. I carved out the balsa block wing tip on the heavy side and STILL had to add lead to the opposite wing tip. I was glad that I laterally balanced the wing before I sheeted it.

Your right.
Never assume anything.
I even had wings on a RTF plane way off and I also after all my adjustments,replacing the clevis pins laterally balanced the wing.
I do that with the fuse also then the CG.
