Can this receiver antenna be fixed?

How can you fix a receiver antenna that was made short when you installed a whip antenna. (In retrospect, installing the whip, which involved cutting the receiver wire, was unwise.) Now I have a receiver with a whip antenna (and about 5 inches of wire without the whip attached) and it won't range check. I can get only about 25 feet away with the tx antenna collapsed. Should I attach a new thin wire (what gauge is receiver wire, 28 or something). Thanks for your help???

Being a combat pilot, most of my antennas have been spliced back together, or have replacment pieces spliced back on. Take your rx to radio shack and get a roll of stranded wire the same size. Also get some shrink wrap. Just a simple solder joint and the shrink wrap is all you need and your in business. BTW, I've been told often by know-it-alls over the years that solder joints are brittle and will break and i shouldn't do it. Well, i've been doing it for years, and just one of my Rx's probably has more time on it in a season than all of theirs put together for a lifetime...and I've never had a problem. One of my antennas has 4 splices in it with no problems and going strong. BTW, whenever I get a new rx, I measure the antenna length and write it on the rx...that way I know how long the repair needs to be.

Nearly all hobby shops stock antenna replacement wire. any flexible, stranded wire of 28 to 22 gauge cut to 39 to 41 inches in length can be soldered to your reciever and it will work like new. You could also just solder an extension to the old wire so that the total length is anywhere from 39 to 41 inches long measured from the receiver case.

I figured out what the problem was. I had the whip antenna laying against the tube of servo wires that runs along the outside of the fuse. They (the manufacturer) warn against this. Apparently the whip is sensitive and if you have these other wires running along it, the tx signal gets drowned out. I turned the whip around so that it faces forward on the fuse. Worked perfect. Flew the Ex-treme for the first time today and it was great. Still getting the engine tuned right but flies like a dream. Thanks for your help.
