Cowl Paint?

I have a fiberglass cowel I want to paint for a glow powered model. What kind of paint works well on fiberglass and resists glow fuel? Is any special prep neccesary?

Thanks,

-Dave

RE: Cowl Paint?

No Special prop required. Paint on the cowl needs to be "hot fuel proof" and can be purchased in spray cans at the hobby shop. Regular hardware store paint such as rustoleum and other brands is sometimes resistant to fuel, but not 100%. Even the so-called "hot fuel proof" will get messed up over time if you get a lot of fuel on the paint. High nitro fuel is especially bad on paint.

RE: Cowl Paint?

I use Rustoleum on my (glow powered) fiberglass cowls. My Super Skybolt has had it on there for over four years and nearly 200 flights and it's as shiny as the day I sprayed it on. There are a couple of rules though:

1. Use ONLY Rustoleum primer, making sure the surface is perfectly clean.
2. Allow the paint to cure for TWO WEEKS. No clearcoat is necessary.

Do that and you won't have any problems.

Some of the Rustoleum colors match MonoKote perfectly too.
