RE: Is It windier this year ?
ORIGINAL: bassmanh wisconsin here, and here is our forcast for tomorrow [X(] Friday Windy. Partly sunny. Chance of thunderstorms in the morning...then thunderstorms likely in the afternoon. Some thunderstorms may be severe in the afternoon. Highs in the mid 80s. South winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts to around 40 mph shifting to the southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts to around 45 mph in the afternoon. Chance of thunderstorms 60 percent. im getting tired of this #%$^@ ;) bassman Sounds about the same as our forecast here in NE Oklahoma.... I am sick of it too. ORIGINAL: jetmech05 saw on the news the other day that there is an unusal dip in the jet stream....unusal not uncommon....not global warming....that is causing the atmosphere to be more unsettled....thats why there have been so many tornados in the midwest....and I'm guessing so windy |
RE: Is It windier this year ?
Today has been the calmest day recently with the highest gust today at 14mph. Unfortunately I already had for plans this evening so no flying...it figures!
|
RE: Is It windier this year ?
I believe I heard some one attributing this years weather abnormalities to the return of "La Nina" which if I remember correctly was a deviation in the jetstream.
Last time it occurred back 8 or 9 years ago it was windy here ( Arkansas ) through July then August came in with +100 deg. temps every day and not a drop of rain. One day in the middle of August our town ( Pine Bluff ) recorded the highest temp. on earth that day ( 114 deg. ). |
RE: Is It windier this year ?
I live here on the east coast just below Cape Cod. Our field is less than 1/4 mile from the ocean. We have a saying "If you're afraid to fly in the wind, get a dog!" Our wind has been about normal with mornings and evenings the calmest and miday between 15 to 25mph.

RE: Is It windier this year ?
10-20 if steady and not variable can make landings and take off easier. we ahve seen lots of gusty days with variable shifts. usually i go out in the am when its calm. did fly my 310 yesterday in 25 mph steady and practiced short field landings.

RE: Is It windier this year ?
A Texas boy here ... and it does seem like the wind is worse than it usually is.
I do have a theory that does not involve global warming though .... since it is a strong south wind it just means that Oklahoma is sucking more than normal this year. :D Now you Okies know I am just funning with ya a little bit. ;) |

RE: Is It windier this year ?
My question is why does it always gust right when I go in to a turn and am sideways to the wind? Sometimes I think the lord almighty is just sitting up there on a cloud testing my skills by waiting for the exact wrong moment to throw a gust at me.:D

RE: Is It windier this year ?
Don't know about the rest of the globe, but the part of it that is western NC is sure cooking. High 90's this whole week, may hit 100 on the weekend, it isn't even August yet. Way strange for us this early in the summer, and the wind started blowing in January and hasn't let up yet. That and no rain in a couple of weeks, this place is dry as a bone. Our Warbird fly-in is this weekend (tomorrow), I hope we still get some people to show up. Last I heard, at least the winds should be under 10-15 mph. I can still fly most of my stuff in the wind, but my bipe is like a big weathervane and it is no fun in a breeze greater than 7-8 mph. Too much like work.
|
RE: Is It windier this year ?
Finally, the wind laid down a bit this morning. Should be around 15 to 20 today which isnt too far from normal. I'm stayin out of the Okie discussion here, got relatives there and family history goes way back to there. :D
My sons wife and family are from Okie land too. Edwin |
RE: Is It windier this year ?
PilotFighter,I am just south of you and fly at the Brazoria field down in Freeport area.............I have learned to manage the 10-15 mph with my 4*40,but these last several days have been too much for me..............I'm stayin in the hangar..........ironin loose monokote...........checkin for loose hardware..........balancing new props..........picking up the pecan tree limbs in my yard......

RE: Is It windier this year ?
The gods must have read our complaints. Atleast in my neck of the woods everything is set for 5-10mph and no rain all weekend...but in the mid 90's and very humid. I might not crash from wind gusts, but might after having a heat stroke! I know you Texans and Okies are calling me a pansy right now, but I suspect you don't have the humidity we have here that makes it seam well over 100 deg. [sm=confused_smile.gif]

RE: Is It windier this year ?
20 to 30 today and its raining off and on. I think we had some hit 40 yesterday. My fleet is all smaller 40 and 60 size scale ships. Years ago, I had a Kougar that flew well in winds up to about 30 or 35. I guess I better consider getting another one. Its real gusty and swirling around to. I would consider getting up before dawn and heading to the field, but it blows all night lately. Its only slightly better at dawn. I might just buy a kite !:D

RE: Is It windier this year ?
It might be cooking in NC but here in Oregon, it is still seems like winter, having to run the heater in the AM for a little bit. It is about 15 degrees cooler than normal around here, and it does seem a bit breezer than normal

RE: Is It windier this year ?
ORIGINAL: Acs_guitars Actually, we have the same thing here... 90's with no wind and 60%+ humidity are common here. We have a heat index of over 110 in the middle of summer. Hot, Hotter, Still Hot, and Christmas!!!! :D:D:D:D Ken |
RE: Is It windier this year ?
As for South Eastern Ontario Canada - I got so tired of wind - I bought a R/C Monster Truck - Something I would have never bet on a couple months ago. Things went beserk last Dec./07 Snow SNow SNOw SNOW !!! and with that wind every day. Don't get me started on wind chill this past winter. Only yesterday it let up and this A.M. Now, It is windy again, but at least some heat finally. Cheers.

RE: Is It windier this year ?
God ken I hate when in august its 109 70% humidity and 30 mph winds makes it feel just that much hotter. I usually hunker down in the house for the month. Nothing like it feeling like someone is blowing a hair dryer in your face in a hot room.
|
RE: Is It windier this year ?
I know that feeling. That's why we do all our flying early in the morning. I'm usually at the field by 7 am and back home by noon when it's that hot. We don't get as high of humidity here as you do up there. But I'll tell you what. I grew up in Missouri and I would much rather have 105 degrees here with 30% humidity than 90 degrees in St. Louis and 90% humidity!!!!! [:@]

Well, the Milwaukee, WI area (Racine) is no different. We've had maybe 3 or 4 days that have been decent so far this year. The rest of the time it's nothing but howling gusting winds. Sure wasn't like that last year...

RE: Is It windier this year ?
I'm in Georgia. We go from cold to warm and rainy, then cold and windy. Then to 90+ degrees and 100 percent humidity.
I think we're at the no wind, 100 percent humidity point next week. Woohoo! Summer! |
