saving a old arf
I have a old arf coverd with then lexan, the fug, is broken in half just behind the wing ,this is a low wing arobatic plane with a 56 " span. The covering oo fug. is torn bad from wing to tail, I was thinking of stripping off old covering adding formers and planking the fug. and covering with film. How about this? I would thank you for any reply's. Glenn. |
RE: saving a old arf
I assume you mean the "fuselage" is broken off behind the wing. I've not seen an airplane covered in Lexan, most are covered with a Monokote type film.
Your airplane can be most likely be repaired without too many problems. Add doublers to the broken areas inside the fuselage. Once everything is structurally sound then recover it using either Monokote or Ultracoat. If you have never covered before it would be a good idea to find someone experienced to guide you. There are some good books on covering, plus tutorials here on RCU. Have fun! If you've never repaired or built before it will certainly be good experience. Take your time and ask a lot of questions. |
RE: saving a old arf
Thanks for the reply Steve, lexan is the trade mark for a very strong plastic , this plane may not be covered with it but is using a thin plastic. I have two of these planes which are a scaled down copy of a swiss airobatic plane sold under the Futaba name in the late 80s or early 90s, both planes were broken in the very same place, must be weak right behind the wing. I have been building RC planes sense the early 80s but have never had to recover a plane like this, I know I will have to beef up from the wing back if I am going to plank but thought I would get some other ideas. If I have not got close to this planes description please let me know. By the way close to the tail it says Futaba 1991 or something close to that date. Thanks for any replys, Glenn. |
