SkyRaider preformance
 

I have a low wing skyraider with an OS .40 LA engine in it. The plane flys.. thats about it. it acts like the very basic step up from a trainer.

i've been thinking about buying another plane, but with the recent price increases around the board for ARFS.. I'm thinking about putting in a different engine.


I currently have a H9 Twist with a Saito .72 in it. It flys GREAT.. but I'd like something that flys fast and stable. i'd like to be able to do nice high speed passes while having a stable plane. A jet comes to mind but.... I cant afford a jet

should I toss in a bigger engine in the sky raider or should I go for any number of specfic planes.

If you care to build a kit, the Ultra Sport 40 is ideal

I dont have the time to build a kit. I'm looking for an arf at least.. I really wanted the H9 pnp pulse :-(

Give that Sky Raider a chance. Our club pylon races these and they are a blast. The .40-LA will fly it well if propped & tuned good. Drop a .46-LA in it for even more fun.

If you still aren't satisfied and want to go faster, look at the GP Super Sportster ARF with a hot .46 or even a .55-AX.

The WM Rambler 45 or thei .40 size Mustang are a couple other good ones.

Take note that I live in Denver, and our club altitude is 5400' +

We lose 20% of our power just because of altitude.

Yah, I thought about that after I replied. I had a Skyraider with a .46-AX and it was almost too much power (if there is such a thing). Maybe in thinner air it could work well though.

Your altitide is definetely your problem.
I have the 40LA in my Mach II and a 46LA in my Mach I.
I use an 11x4 prop on both with 15% nitro.
I love both of them and they fly well. I am at about 2,500 feet.
The Mach I is very aerobatic as the wing is semi symetriacal vs a flat bottom as is on most trainers.
The Mach II is even better and quicker to respond because so much lighter and smaller.
Given your altitude you will need to up the motor.
I'm sure others in your area have the same problem and should be able to recomend a good engine.
I would guess the 46AX would bring it up to a fun plane status.

The LA engines are noted for their anemic performance. I'd put another BB 40 - 46 in that bird and I bet it will come alive!

Buy a used 46 fx here on rc u for 75.00 and you will have totally new plane, I had one of these with a 46 fx and loved it finally after 3 years I gave it to a club member. When I bought mine they were 59.00.

I find it interesting that the Skyraider is only a very minor step up from a high wing trainer for you.
Our club uses this plane and 40 class bushing engines (40LA, 46LA, TT-GP42 are the most common engines) for pylon racing and people just can't save them for that.
The plane will do virtually any trick in the book (not 3d tricks).
We are at 500 ft elevation, but I have taken a plane with me to Thayne Wyoming and I did not think it performed much differently than it does here.

I'm guessing it acts like an advanced trainer because of the engine in the plane..

If you have'nt already tried it. Try it with a APC 9x6 on it.
