Balancing a spinner?

I've balanced props before but I've been told I should balance the spinner also. I'll be installing a 3" aluminum spinner and have a Topflight magnetic balancer.

I don't have instructions with the balancer so how would I go about doing this? Is it even possible with t he magnetic one?
Thanks, Expo

RE: Balancing a spinner?

I wouldn't worry about balancing the spinner. The moment of the spinner is quite small compared to the moment of the prop. Just balance your prop.

If you really want to, here's an RC Groups thread with some photos showing how to do it:

On the High point and dubro balancers you can also balance spinners outboard of the balancer with the arbor sticking out just the main end of the spinner

The instructions come with the balancer

That will work for spinner cones that screw into the back plate, but for aluminum spinners (like Tru Turn) that screw into a special prop nut, you need to run the balancing rod through it, like that RC Groups post shows.

Just to "chim in"...I have many tru-turn spinners and I have not had to balance any of them. Just from my experience with tru-turn, they come extremely well balanced. Sorry, I know this is off topic. BTW, nice thread/link on the spinner balance. ;)

RE: Balancing a spinner?

The only time I've ever worried about balancing a spinner was when I had to cut the prop opening in the cone out to fit. I figured I may have got it out of balance after modifying it, so I put it on a balancer.
