Engine preservation
I have a few engines that are no longer in production. Some of them have been run, some of them are NIB. I plan to run most of them again in the future, but it may not be for quite some time. A few of them may sit for several years before they get mounted. I want to preserve them somehow to inhibit corrosion. I'm thinking about placing them in plastic coffee cans filled with either motor oil or automatic transmission fluid.
Has anybody done this before? Anybody have a better recomendation? |
RE: Engine preservation
Marvel Mystery Airtool oil . Remove the glow plug and attach a piece of fuel tube to the crankcase vent and add oil, turn over and add little more. Store in a zip lock bag. remove as much air as possible.
Tranny fluids have a high acid content , I would avoid them . |
RE: Engine preservation
You can also get some sort of desicant to absorb moisture. I believe that this is available in small pouches and/or impregnated in paper. You might try something like that along with a few drops of oil and storage in a dray place.

RE: Engine preservation
Marvels Airtool oil/ Automatic Transmission oil mixed 50/50, injected through the carb, flip prop a few times, repeat process. Wrap in paper towel with rubber band to secure and store. This has worked wonderfully for me, with no problems with Automatic Transmission oil, what so ever.

...And old ammo cans with the rubber seal work great to keep the moisture out too!
You can get them at the Army Navy Surplus for about 6 bucks each and they will hold about 6 to 8 engines. |
RE: Engine preservation
When I store my engines, I use 3 in 1 oil and a baggie. I put oil in the carb and the cylinder top, flip it over a few times and then bag it up. I have stored engines for years this way with no problems. Good Luck, Dave
