Will a muffler melt a nylon engine mount?
I have an OS 1.60 with a Pitts muffler and the muffler body is resting right on the nylon engine mount. Will the muffler melt it?
I've looked and looked for a muffler spacer to move the muffler away from the engine mount but haven't found anything suitable. Steve |

Under normal operating temperatures, you should be OK...but if you get the engine a little too lean and hot, it can melt into the plastic a bit...BTDT.:D
Edit: I'm talking about the gray glass filled nylon type, like the Kraft-Hayes or GP mounts. Some of the mounts I've seen that come with ARFs seem to be more plastic or have more plastic in them and are more flexable, and might not be as temperature resistant, so...? |

This is a Great Planes ARF. The engine mount is black.
Any idea what the operating temp of an OS 1.60 might be? http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/a...article_id=262 |

Where on the mount does the muffler hit? Depending on where it is, you might be able to remove a little material from the mount or maybe flatten the muffler a little ion that area to get a little clearance. I imagine the worst that might happen is a slightly burnt, crusty spot on the mount.

I did remove some material from the mount a bit (maybe 1/8"), but was concerned about taking too much away and creating an area that might be weak. I think I'll just mount the muffler and see what happens. Maybe I can slip some nomex in there if I can find a scrap of it somewhere. It would be difficult to flatten the muffler as it is a Slimline smoke muffler and that section has the smoke coil in it. I don't want to damage that in the process.

you can make your own spacer if you go to the auto parts store and buy yourself some gasket making sheets they come in a 12' x 12' sheet and about 1/8" thick , take this and cut out a gasket between the engine and muffler and wola ! ..... instant spacer , you can even double up on it which would give you a quarter inch more clearance then what you have, this would also serve as a good seal for the muffler connection to the engine and limit any possible leaks from fuel keeping your engine compartment cleaner as well, just make sure you use locktite on your muffler screws and you should be fine

edit from above ........(12" x 12") sheet retails for around 5 or 6 bucks ........ not 12 feet lol

I've bought some really good heat protection material at a speed shop in the past too. It was like a silicon with some sort of synthetic fire-resistant cloth backing. I didn't use it for RC but I'm sure it has applications like this.

RE: Will a muffler melt a nylon engine mount?
I would give more thought to vibration and flexing of the muffler causing problems if the muffler is touching anything. I have mufflers that are close to the mounts and never seen any melting but I have seen broken cases from mufflers hitting mounts and fuse sides.

Yes...I'm more concerned about the vibration issue than the heat. I'm going to make a couple of gaskets...that should do the trick.
Thanks guys. Steve |

Miller hill
I have several planes that are powered by a OS 1.60 2 stroke and use the GP black 2 piece motor mounts. These are the mounts that are typically supplied with GP arf's. To date ,after many years of service I have had no problems what so ever with these motor mounts. Regards, Roby |
