2.4 ?
 

I heard a Rumor that the 2.4 radios where shouting down or rebooting (whatever they call it) from the cold, around thirty degs. and below. Not a good as 72's in cold weather. Any info on this, my first winter with 2.4?

If you are refering to rebinding, I am flying Futaba fast 2.4 with 6 volt flight packs and I have had no problems in cold weather. Good Luck, Dave

If it's occuring, it's probably the battery dropping voltage in the cold. Use a 5 cell battery and a field charger to keep the voltage up.

I have experianced flight recently at that temperature and slightly colder using both XPS and the new Hitec systems with rock solid performance.

As already been said if someone is expericing problems with the cold its likely not radio but battery problems.

I for one would not operate any 2.4 system without a five cell battery and (this is important) an appropriate charger.

Thanks for the quick responce. I guess it should be good to go. I use 5 cell 1400 mAh bat.

Yup Rich you should be good to go if you are using an appopriate charger to charge that battery with.

Lots of folks will try to use the typical 70Mah wall chargers they are use to by charging for an extended period but there is no good way to know if your battery is up to capacity after charging that way and as a result I see more and more problems showing up simply because their batterys are not fully charged. Its easy to get confused with extended charge periods especially if you fly frequently.

I have a volt watch in the aircraft and I use a hobbie co field charger at the field. at home the night before cycle and charge. I do not use the wall wart.

Hey Rich sounds like that setup will work just fine for you. If you are cycling the battery every time you go to the field, that is a little excessive and there is no need. I may check a bettery and cycle it several times a year if it is used frequently.

All types of batteries have limits on cycle life. In other words every time a battery runs a cycle of use and charge you will be shortening the life of the battery.

Thanks John, never thought of that. Rather than cycle, just peak charge. Maybe cycle every three months. On other planes in my trailor I use wall warts on a timer set for 3 hrs a day just to keep them up. So that if I decide to fly another I wasn't planning on I can be pretty sure its up to snuff. Testing bat. before flying of course.
