hinge removal

I have to rehinge the rudder on my Ultra stick because one of the hinges broke. Is there any way to remove the old hinges?

Are they CA hinges? If so, the only thing to do is cut them and either put new CA hinges next to the old ones or use a different type of hinge

Yes, they are CA hinges. I will be using pin hinges, but I have to put them right where the ca hinges are.

If you are very careful and very lucky, you can sometimes cut them out.

Cut the hinges first to remove the surface. Then use an X-acto to cut on either side of the hinge and slice it away from the balsa. Now try to pull the hinge out. Then you can cut the slot to the required width.

It's really best to rehinge at a different location but if you really have to, sometimes this works.

RE: hinge removal

I removed CA hinges once and it turned out easy. I used my Great Planes Slot cutter, the one with twin oscillating blades. What I did is I fiddled with them till I got one blade on top of the hinge and the other on the bottom. In other words the plastic part of the hinge is between the oscillating blades. This does increase the size of the opening somewhat and I didn't use CA to install the new hinges. What I used is Gorilla glue (SMALL AMOUNT) to install the new hinges. Now I never use CA, just the Gorrilla Glue.

Good luck

Mark
