Boy Scouts: Aviation Merit Badge

Anyone out there ever lead a group of Boy Scouts to earn this award? I've just started planning this for a group of scouts and thought I'd check to see if anyone has some tip/tricks that worked for them. Thanks.

RE: Boy Scouts: Aviation Merit Badge

I have a young man that I am working with. He built an ARF with my supervision and after learning how to fly the plane, he was awarded his Aviation Merit Badge. That was a year ago and today he still fly's with us and is addicted to RC. Our club has also had the scout troop out to the field. We had 4 trainers set up and every scout got to fly. Out here the rules to obtain the Badge is set up by the scout leader as far as what they want the boys to do to earn it. The young man that I am still working with came form the east coast and the requirments were quite a bit different there. as well. Good Luck, Dave

RE: Boy Scouts: Aviation Merit Badge

The guys at the local airport took a few hundred Scouts up in the air, 3 at a time in 3 or 4 different airplanes.

One of the guys neglected a pre-flight and ran out of gas shortly after takeoff, crash landing through a fence and damaging the plane and surrounding property. Luckily no one was hurt.

I just wanted to share. I don't think I posted about this yet but find it pretty disturbing. Sort of related to this thread, so to tie it in...

When you are flying, especially with others, and even more especially with children, please be safe ;)
