Engine Recommendation for Yak 73"
I'm just wondering what engine I should put on that plane? I don't have the plane yet but next time I get thru springfield I'm going to pick one up. I have a saito 180 and a mark 2.1 on hand but I think the 2.1 will be waaaay over kill. looking at the os 1.6 fx but alot of people say they have some sort of problem aka: fuel draw/air leaks, not enough pressure to draw the fuel, has anyone thought about using the stock os muffler? instead of a pitts style muffler. also looking at the dave patrick 1.8 with a pitts muffler. I do not really want to go gas it just up's the wing loading alot. looking to stay as lite as possable. will the saito 180 give it unlimited vertical with just running 15% nitro? I'm looking for great performance (3d). I know that I opened a can of beans here but anyones help would be great. the field elevation is only 850 ft msl at the local airport would like to use one type of fuel for all my glow airplane getting tired of hauling 0%-15% and gas to the field all the time. I've been on the os support sight and bax says to run large fuel line on the os 1.6, also he reccomends using the stock muffler over the pitts style, can i go with that setup? would that require carving up the firewall and the cowling? I have all winter to decide so I have a little time to think about this. any responce will be great, thanks.

RE: 73" yak which motor??????
Hi Ken,
I think your Saito will be good enough at your elevation. You should be able to pull it around with authority. OS also works great. It's really your call.

RE: 73" yak which motor??????
I run the YS 1.40 sport on mine, cool power heli 30 fuel, APC 18x6 prop at 9100 rpm, 3D is aggressive, no disappointments on performance in any way. I've played with the Saito 1.8, and on the same fuel they run well. they really like the 30% heli fuel. If you like to tinker, I have a converted G26, machined down so there is NO excess material on the case, electronic ignition, with muffler, and it weighs 40oz RTF, which is only a little more than the 1.40. I can run 14 mins on 10oz of fuel, so I am carrying almost half the fuel weight compared to the 1.40 as well. this engine spins the Mezjlik 18x6 at 9000 just like the 1.40 does. The Yak weighs 11 lbs even with the 1.40 and all metal geared servos and a large NiCd battery...with the modified G26, small ignition battery and small receiver battery, it weighs 11 lbs 2oz. There is no performance difference, both are great, the four stroke sounds better, the gas is a lot cheaper. Good luck!

RE: 73" yak which motor??????
ken, i have had the 72" with a 160fx with a pitts style muffler and a perry pump and it ran great(still does). on my 73 i have had a 3W 28cc and the YS 140 sport, both fly the plane very well but the 3w has more power and burns cheaper fuel. i am selling both engines and going back with the os 160 and a mouse can pipe. if any one wants a 3W 28 i'm selling mine for 500.00 with pitts mufler, stand offs, 5 props, and spinner. the YS is going for 325.00 with a prop and alum prop nut. both engines are almost new and in great shape.

RE: 73" yak which motor??????
I am running the OS160 with Slimline Pitts and Perry pump. The pump is key because of the distance of the tank from the carb. I tried the Bison Pitts. I switched to the Slimline and picked up over 400 rpm and lost a few ounces of weight. A friend here at the field is flying the 72 inch with an Evolution 26 CC. He says the power is much better on mine with the OS160. If you are going to run a small gasser you have to have it on a tuned can or pipe to get the performance.

you need the fuel tank on the c of g and you will have a hard time getting fuel to pump up to the engine even with a header tank. the perry pump is the way to go, it's easy and trouble free. i have set up two planes this way with no problems. i also used a fuel magnet in the tanks so it never gets any air bubbles.

If your in Menomonie, you shouldn't have to worry about elevation. I have an os on my yak, but only have a few flights on it. I don't have a perry pump on it, but I'm not looking to do a lot of 3D yet. If I was, the perry pump would be the way to go. A friend had that setup on his Giles, works pretty slick.
I didn't want the engine inverted, so I have it sideways with a slimline pitts muffler.

RE: Engine Recommendation for Yak 73"
I am currently flying the QQ 73" with a Saito 180 using a perry pump, prozinger 18X6 and Morgan Cool Power 30% Heli Fuel.
At approximatly 8500 rpm performance is amazing. unlimited verticle, hovers at 1/3 +/- throttle. This is a great combo. The plane weighs in at 11lb 11oz..

RE: Engine Recommendation for Yak 73"
well i went for the ys 140 sport, hope to get it in the air before it's to cold up here. the plane is really light for it's size. I'm going to try a APC 18-6w prop first and see how things work.

RE: Engine Recommendation for Yak 73"
Hi,
Just to confuse things I have a 72" GSP giles which is about 11.5 lbs dry, similar to the Yak. I have a Moki 1.35 turning an APC 18 x 6w, Bisson Pitts silencer and straight fuel. Vertical performance is unlimited....
Cheers

I am running the YS140 Sport with the Bolly 19x6 carbon fiber prop and 30% heli fuel. This is my first plane of this caliber and capabilities and loving every minute of it.

RE: Engine Recommendation for Yak 73"
I am running the engine between 8900-9000rpm (The most I have measured when tunning the high end before it started falling back off is 9300rpm) in temperatures ranging from 32-55 degrees fahrenheit.
