RE: New Somenized (TM) 69", Yak-54
Sounds like a load of something that smells bad. From QQ's site, the engine requirements for the 73" plane are:
Engine: Saito 180, YS 140, OS 160 or equivalent 26cc-30cc gasoline engines or Eflite power 160 for electric motor
The 69" plane has not been around for very long, and my guess is that there's too much excitement, and a growing market for 120 size planes, for this one to be discontinued.
But what do I know, I just play with flying toys

Yeah, I agree. & to be quite honest, My wife picked the plane up for me and this is what the LHS told her, so I'm not 100% sure if the communication between the LHS & QQAC happened before or after shipment. I will call QQAC 1st thing in the morning and my LHS to get this straightened out.
Just to be clear, I am in no way trying to start a rumor here. And, I am in no way bad-mouthing my LHS. I have full faith in both companies.
Just trying to get the facts.

The big difference I see between the two is wingloading. My 69" is 19.4 oz/sq ft and the 73" is 24.2 (w/ the lightest weight engine) - that's 25% higher. That makes slow flight / stall characteristics very different.

I agree 100% with TexasFlyer. The whole reason for me to retire the Showtime 90 and move the gear into this yak was wingloading. It had plenty of power (unlimited vertical even @ 10.5 lbs), but it just felt like a flying brick.
Funny side note - I think that I have a "problem" that is opposite to most of us in this hobby. My wife's response to this 73" vs 69" thing was "why don't you just buy a bigger engine & keep this one? I'm sure you can find something else for your 125!" Then about 10 minutes later she asked me when I was going to get something bigger, like a 85-100cc. Man, I love that woman!

OK...just got off the phone with QQAC (spoke with Alicia and then with QuiQue himself...nice people)
The 69" yak is not in stock, it is no longer in production, and at this time they have no plans to have any more built.
Also, (just as we expected) the Saito 125 will not work in the 73" yak. According to "the man", it's not so much a power issue...but a balance issue...would take a pound of lead to balance & that is what would kill the performance.

Rajul,
where did you find one? I have called around everywhere trying to snatch one off some one's shelf. They all say that they drop ship from QQAC and were not aware of the discontinuation. I wonder if you'll end up w/ a 73" too[sm=confused.gif]

RE: New Somenized (TM) 69", Yak-54
Just catching up on the thread...
Mike (Rajul): I didn't notice that you were in metro Houston, too. Jeff (ArcherIIDriver) is in N Houston, I'm in NW Houston, and you are in SW Houston. Jeff and I PMed each other and met face-to-face last week at the SPARKS fun fly & swap meet. Once you and Jeff get your Yaks ready to fly, we should all meet together and have a Yak-fest!
OctaneHuffer: Good point about the "scale thing". Having said that, if the 69" wingloading is 19.4, the 73" is 24.2, and the 86" is 26, then it seems that the 73" has a heavier wingloading relative to its size than the others. I'd expect its wingloading to be closer to the 69" since it is only 4 inches larger rather than the 86" which is 13" larger, but it isn't. I'm guessing the latest generation planes are just lighter.
Jeff: Too bad it is being discontinued. I fixed my undercarriage and it seems to work great. I'm trying an experiment, using only two aluminum screws vs 3 stainless steel screws. I'm hoping that if (when ) I have another really bad landing, that they will sheer before the undercarriage. Nylon bolts, even 1/4 inch, tend to break too easily. Hopefully I'll never get to test this but if I do, I'll let everyone know. All I can say is do what you can to reinforce the undercarriage before the first flight. I also adjusted the CG to be less tail heavy and landings are much more predictable now, though inverted flight is no longer neutral (was almost hands off).

I ordered a 69" QQ Yak from my LHS When I go to pick it up, the LHS owber tells me that QQAC called him prior to shipping my plane & informed him that the 69" version is no longer being produced and that it is being "replaced" by the 73" version

If you knew that a plane your JUST recieved , is now discontinued, and you will no longer be able to buy parts for it ( we all are going to have misshaps)
would you still want it????

Here's some pics of my almost finished Yak. The YS110 needed to be recessed becase with the Hyde mount the regulator was against the cowl lip and I really didn't want to cut into that part of the cowl. I also made a platform and moved the fuel tank back to the wing tube, I was worried the plane would be nose heavy but when I balanced it today without the rudder servo, reciever, and battery but with everything else it was perfect at 6 1/2", man I was happy! I'll be able to move the battery around to nail it when I fly.
