Default 85 or 100?

What is the best set up for the Python. The 85 is lighter but, it seems most are using the 100.

Thanks
Scott

The python comes setup for the DA 100. There is some firewall work that needs to be done to install the DA85. Also an airbox needs to be fabricated. I already had a DA100 - so that is what I used. The DA100 is a little smoother and will swing a larger prop - but weighs a little more.

But you can save a few bucks with the DA85, but I think the airframe won't last as long (but that is my opinion only). And I hate to chop up a nice looking motor box.

Just my 2 cents worth.

My 100 swung a 27x10, my 85 swings a 27x10 and weighs less doing it.

camss69, what RPM did both engines spin the 27-10 and was it the same brand prop? not wanting a fight here just wondering. a friend of mine had a 3W85 that would swing the same size prop but a few hundred RPMS less.

For now I prefer the 100 on this plane but you must keep it light. I have flown both and the 85 is still feeling some growing pains. If you not careful your python with a 100 can end up in the 29 pound range and then wont fly like you want it to still good but; the 85 with a pipe can end up in the 27 plus pound area so just be careful and keep it lite.

Prop is the same prop 27x10 Xoar Sword. The 100 was around 6200, the 85 is around 5800 last I checked. The 85 has no problem whatsoever spinning this prop.

FWIW I have a QQ dealer that flys at my field, he had one of the first Pythons out, he built it with the 100 and I flew it, it was good obviously. He then swapped it out with the 85 and it was way better, flew much lighter with plenty of power. PLENTY of power, he was running a Mejzlik 26x12 on his, and the 85 ripped. Then he took it to the Fresno 3d fest, him and another guy with the 100 drag raced straight up and they were pretty much dead even, the 100 on muffs, and the 85 on the pitts.

If I was building a python it would be with the 85.

Hey Mike, My Python will have the new version DA 100 on mufflers along with one receiver battery and one 8711 rudder servo. I'm hoping to stay at or just below 27.5 pounds. Think this can happen? Any tips you can give me to keep it light that I might not be thinking about? BTW, I see this post is rather old but was hoping you might see it.

I've now 50+ flights on my DA100 Python. Weight is 28lbs. Performance is fantastic. Feels like a big fun fly as wing loading is very low, even at this weight - the best bipe I've ever flown, by a long way.

I also have a DA85 in another airplane. Again, huge amounts of power but it shakes the hell out of the airframe.

My personal vote would be to have the DA100, sounds great, performs great and gives the airframe a fighting chance of living past 100 flights!

Default RE: 85 or 100?

the thing to keep them lite is to not add anything that isnt absolutely necessary.

My setup on one of these would be
Stock mufflers ... canisters are heavy!!!
Spektrum ar9100 rx also Has a switch with it lite and simple.
2 fromeco 5200 batteries on rx no battery for ign
No regs for rx (8711 and if you go hitec the hitec 7955 can handle the volts )
I feed ign from a free rx channel.
1 42% products electric kill switch weighs 0.25 oz with a inline reg from mpi from kill switch to ign ( RCats switch cant handle more than 6 volts) and the reg is because the DA ign cant handle the volt.
1 rudder servo 8711 or the new high voltage type.
Carbon spinner from azzure hobbies ~3.8 oz and has a1 screw in the center to hold it on like a true turn(not the mezjlick one to many screws)
no baffles if its a da100- there have been many other of these with the da100 no baffle that hasnt had any problems.
Go with carbon fiber landing gear. <===this will be a good chunk of ozs lost.
Foam pilot from Aircraft international ~1 oz
if you need a dash panel use a stick-on sticker type.
Use kevan 4 inch airfield tires (option to use titanium axles if you want)
use the least amount of things to tie down wires!!

Remember to not add any thing; no extra reinforcement any were the plane doesnt need any; dont use 18 gauge wires it way over kill 20 gauge is just fine; and dont have several feet of excess wire rolled up inside. Under no circumstance do you add lead or any other weight to the plane to balance it; if it wont balance move the equipment until it does cg.

Edit
if you go with a123 batts still use 2 but delete the reg for the ign.

Ive been reading these threads (and others) and was turning myself off the 85 and back on to the 100.

Just read a FG thread which is putting me back on to the 85.

I need to use something quieter that stock mufflers
I want to keep the weight down, and the power to weight as good as possible.

This thread has gotten me all jittery about the 85 : I think I am convinced it has adequate power - I am concerned about vibration : is it really that much of an issue ?

The 85 has plenty of power without a doubt. The vibration is horrible from what I've heard from everyone. It will vibrate to the point of breaking welds on exhaust systems. Your airframe will not hold up like it would with a twin. From what I hear the 85 runs very strong but sounds horrible! Not sure becouse I've never heard one running but I've had several people tell me this. I really want to use an 85 too but everything I've read and the people I've talked to all say the same things which makes the 100 the better choice by far I believe. It's a bummer becouse the Python with an 85 would be like a big foamy no doubt. It's not worth the chance of problems so the twin 100 of choice sounds like the ticket and from what I hear the Python still has very light wing loading with the 100 and will still 3D like mad.

My DA85 didnt shake at all the only problems i had were all taken care of by updates ie the Aluminum carb bolt broke repeatedly and the seals leaked. Those have all been addressed though. I would have another 85 powered plane but right now i think i like the DA100 better on the 35%ers.

Funny how some of the 85cc's are non-shakers and then some rip the plane appart in 7-flights.....
side note:
The guys with the shakers (shaking the plane appart) with the 85cc engines are not Rookie's ..... actually the opposite....

I would stay away from the 85's unless you have to absolutely have to have the lightest plane possible.....

IMHO....
