Default Best sub-$500 1/8 scale buggy (preferably RTR)

Hey everyone,
I am looking for a 1/8 buggy that is less than $500. I have done a lot of research, but have found many complaints of issues with most of the cars I have considered. I have also found that many of the sub-$500 cars are not RTR, and don't even include an engine. I am on a tight budget, so I am curious as to what you would recommend for a buggy that is less than $500 and is RTR. It would also have to be fairly durable and reliable. I plan to do more bashing and off-roading than racing, so it should be strong enough to handle jumps. Any suggestions?

don't get the rtr inferno. it is nothing like the k3 or mp777. what about an ofna. the 9.5's are better bashers imo because they are wider but the hypers are better racers. i think the 9.5's are not race legal unless you are in the unlimited class correct me if i am wrong.
take a look at these.
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXAXV5&P=7]Hyper 7 RTR[/link]
[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXDUS7&P=ML]Ofna 1/8 Hyper 7 PBS Buggy RTR w/Starter Box[/link]
all the 9.5's have bigger than .21 size engine which are normally not legal in races.
but if you buy an ofna you should buy this[link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXUZ89&P=ML]Hitec Steering Servo.[/link] cause the stock servos are weak
ill post more info later
and for a bit more you can get a sportwerks mayhem which is 549 but it comes with a nice Radio. although i think it has a .26 engine.[link=http://www.horizonhobby.com/Shop/ByCategory/Product/Default.aspx?ProdID=SWK1200]Sportwerks Mayhem RTR[/link]
or [link=http://www.rcmodels.com/swk1200.html]Sportwerks Mayhem RTR[/link]
hope i helped

I would also have to vote for the Ofna's. I have owned the Mbx Pro and the 9.5 MBX, its definietly worth spend the few extras bucks and get the 9.5 mbx. Has pillowball suspension so more durable. Also ofna gives you a glow ignitor and a fuel spout, all you have to do is put it on a 20oz pop bottle. So it costs less to start up.

The GS Storm would be a great choice for a good price.

For that price of 340, I would get that Storm, it's a good car I think. But, Ofnas are better bashing cars (somebody got it right) and parts for the ofna are found everywhere, same with the Kyosho sports, but I heard it's not good. The Mayhem will be a good choice, and the Swift too. It all depends on what you want, some cars can be good in some ways and suck in others, and at 500 for an RTR there's got to be something that sucks about each car, you'll not find a perfect car, It all depends on you.

If you can get the Storm rtr for 340.00 go for it. My vote goes for the Sportwerks Mayhem. Very good motor .26 rated at 2.75 hp JR fm radio with a 85 oz steering servo, and a Roto start type of starting setup. IMO pull starts are a pain. Price varies but my LHS sells them for less than 500.00 . Durability is good as good or better than the Storm and part are dirt cheap. A pair of A arms are 7.99.

Na, you better get the Ofna new for 300 plus 7 shipping at Tower Hobbies. And usually they have discounts, and I right now I think that shipped it will cost you 277, don't buy eBay unless much cheaper.

I agree on the Sportwerks Mayhem. Excellent radio, one piece pipe, etc.... very nice car for the money.

The Ofna 9.5 RTR that comes with the starter box is a big feature also. Especially for the new guy who doesn't have a starter box & will get to hate those nasty PS's quick. Rotostart is a good option for a rtr too.
Pull starters suck.

You could get a lightning2 RTR. Most owners (including me) are really happy with them.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for all of the replies! Sorry I took so long to reply, but I was gone for the week. My school had October break. Currently, I am tallying up the scores for the individual cars, and I have narrowed it down to a few cars that I will decide between. I have a few questions though. First of all, I have a question about the Hyper 7 PBS. I know that the steering servo that comes with it is weak, but what about the break servos? Are they good, or would the need replacing as well? And I have question about the GS Storm. Are parts easy to find or replaceable with parts from other companies? It is attractively priced, and I have heard that people love the Storm. It is probably between the Storm and the Hyper 7, now. I think the Hyper is more widely used, but it is pretty expensive for my budget. On the other hand, I don't know if parts are very easy to find for the Storm. But I think that I may have seen the Storm at my LHS, so if it turns out that they carry parts for it, I will definately get the Storm.

Thanks for the help,
Evan

nitro monkey has the hyper 7 pbs rtr for $440, and lightning hobby has it for $460. those are the best prices i have found. i'm also looking to buy a buggy here pretty soon. i've narrowed my choices down to the hyper 7 pbs and the 9.5 mbx. i may look into the mayhem but i like the ofnas alot. also, rcmart has the pbs without radio for $316 but they are located in hong kong i think and shipping is like $60 or so[]. for the money, i think that nitro monkey has the best deal at $440 for a complete rtr.

Honest opinion is to avoid RTR`s if possible, the kyosho rtr is the worst rtr i have ever had the misfortune to own.I would certainly consider the hyper 7 pbs, its a very tough buggy and has a fairly decent engine to get you up and going.

Good Luck

Hm... At $440, the Hyper 7 is looking more and more plausible. Thanks for that interesting bit of info. Oh, and RoyG, I know that RTR's are not usually the best options, but I don't have the time to build an R/C car, and I don't have the money to buy better parts individually. But I still want an R/C car, so I have to go with an RTR.

Wow, I just came across a wonderful looking car, and it is RTR. Well, actually it is not a car; it is an MT. It is the Traxxas Revo. I have been wondering if an MT would be better suited to me because I would be doing more bashing than racing. But this MT is supposed to be a good racer as well. And I know of a placer where I could do things like rock climbing. And so far, I have not heard a single bad comment about the Revo, and apparently it is really durable. Then there's the price of $440. I looks like a third contender has entered the ring! I will now have to decide between the Storm, Hyper 7, or the Revo. I still have not gotten a response from my LHS, so I don't know if they carry parts for the Storm or Hyper 7 yet.

Evan

p.s. Does anyone here have a Revo?

I've got a 9.5 with lots of upgrades, spares, assorted goodies, new engine, upgraded servos, ect. Great basher, good racer. If you ever get a chance to drive a 1/8th buggy do so, you'll be amazed at how well they handle and jump. Send me a pm if your interested in my buggy.

the hyper 7 pbs is a great buggy but the 9.5 might be a better basher. I love my hyper and beat the snot out of it every chance I get. I think you can get the 9.5 a bit cheaper than the hyper though
