RE: personal transponder, which one?
I don't know about either of those, but if you're looking for a budget PT, look into the one Axial is coming out with. It isn't out yet, but it's listed on horizonhobby.com as "out of stock" and the price is under $42. Maybe, the second one is the one I'm talking about, but I couldn't tell because of the lack of info on it, as well as the fact that no photos of the Axial one have been released yet. I don't think you want the Robitronc one (the first one you listed) because I don't think it will be supported at any track, if that's what you're looking for, because it's meant to be used with it's own dedicated lap counter system. In other words, you can't use it when racing because it is incompatible with the AMBrc scoring system used at all tracks. Just go with the official AMBrc one, It's sure to work, because its the only official transponder supported by AMBrc, and you know it'll work reliably, with the fewest errors. I haven't gotten a transponder yet because I've been spending all my money on stuff for my new RC8, but I do know that it will be a genuine AMBrc personal transponder. hope this helps.

Not trying to jack the thread, but I have a JR XS3 radio and receiver with channel 3. Would I just plug the transponder to channel 3 or do I get direct power some other way?

AMB PTs are getting more expensive because they're made in Europe. And because of a weak american dollar, the price of PTs has gone up. The EURO is equal to something like 1.5 USD. It doesn't help that AMB almost has a monopoly on the race timing market.

Check your local tracks to see what lap counting program they run. Chances are it is AMB. If you are not racing at a track with a lap counting system, you don't need a personal transponder.

RE: personal transponder, which one?
Actually these work too. www.rclaps.com
We have been using them at our local track. Not a single lap missed yet. On an official AMB system. And the price is around $72.
There is more than one reason why our little red transponders cost more and more.
One reason is they have no competition. The new transponder, while made in Europe as well, is trying to compete.
There are benefits. One, lower pricing and two, you should read about these to make sure I remember this correctly,
if you race more than one class, like I do, you can have a handful of personal transponders and they can ALL have the same number.
That's real easy to remember instead on trying to figure out what the number is in your truggy because you have your buggy memorized and can't
remember your truggy because you have it mixed up with your MT.
Plus, you save a little coin and you can put it somewhere else.
It is also a tad smaller, which is no biggie.
Just my 2 cents.
