RE: question about purpose.
Not a lot. With the best will in the world it will never be a great racer.
It can be raced though, just replace the steering servo with a better quality item, get a NiMh receiver pack, put oil in your diffs other than grease, replace shock oil with a quality item and put a decent .21 engine in it.
Some weight saving upgrades might be worth a look but i wouldn't spend a lot of money on it as you'd be better off saving that towards a new buggy in the future

Like was said, it can be raced. Especially if you're a novice. The buggy makes very little difference in the beginning because you're still learning to keep it between the pipes along with everyone else. You'll drive just as bad with an MP9 as an MBX
Just put some decent servos in it (because those can be used on your next one) and oil in the diffs, like was said, and go race.

Not my buggy but he is a very good friend of mine and he loves it! I know he has done even more to it since those pics but has not put up the newest pics yet.

Pretty much any buggy can be raced. Do what they said above with the servos and diffs and go have fun. After awhile you can get something better if you want to me more competitive and such but just for casual racing should be fine.

RE: question about purpose.
I had an ultra LX pro, converted it to an MBX. I raced it quite a bit for about 3 or 4 months, then started trying other buggies, and I still don't look back. Like said above, it can be raced, but once your skills start sharpening up some, you're gonna want something that'll handle better.
