SOMETHING IS WRONG, PLEASE ADVISE
 

I've just fitted a set of Kyosho ally clutch shoes with 1.1 springs to a Kyosho 3 shoe flywheel and something aint right. The tips of the springs touch the coiled section of the spring in front which prevents the shoes from resting on the flywheel nut. It's like the spring tips are too long. I can lift the shoes for about 2cm before the spring tension takes hold. I've run the car and the shoes are not binding but I know things are not correct. Bill61 has tried to help but has come to a dead end. It is not bad springs or the wrong flywheel as I noticed the same thing last week when I replaced the clutch shoes on another car. I must be doing something real dumb. Can somebody give me any help please?

It sounds like the short end of the spring is not snapped behind the flywheel nut.

look at your manual that will tell you about the installation of it ...i was doing the same as you until i read the trusty manual hope everything works out

yeah as fourbolt said. the springs have to go at right angles behind the nut.

Thanks for all your help. I think I know what the problem is. Just spoken to my LHS who supplied the clutch springs and was told that some of the springs are coming through a bit too long. He suggested cutting the tip of the spring so it doesn't touch the spring in front. How does this sound to you guys?

I have a vast stock of all different sizes of Kyosho springs, and this is news to me.

It's news to me too but that's what the man said. The LHS I spoke of specialises in buggies so I hope they know what there on about. Pointless me ordering more springs as he said most of them are coming through too long. Still don't know what to do.

Well Boz, I hope that this is the source of your problem. You have struggled with this for a while now. I still don't see how the tails being too long would keep the shoes from having tension on them for the first couple of mm when pulling on them.

Bill, it's not the tails that are too long it's the main part of the spring that goes over the shoes. Just the tip, about 1.5mm is all. It's this bit that is stopping the shoes from resting on the f/wheel nut.

Oh well that makes sense. I have heard of racers trimming them to adjust the engagement point of their clutch. I was thinking it was the tails this whole time, DUH!
Well you got it solved now, go give it hell! Run the snot out of that buggy, and wear something out.
I didn't get to break in my new engine this weekend, my bashing buddy was busy and I wanted to teach him how to do it as I gave him a new engine for an old buggy that I had given him last year. It is a Royal .21 that I had as a back-up sitting in the box for going on 10 years now. Won't be a powerful engine, but it will keep his buggy running. He is new to the whole nitro scene and I have been trying to teach him when I can.
I kept myself busy putting a new engine in my old buggy. I will break in that engine tomorrow and wait for next weekend to break in my P5 and my Kanai.

Barry at three5 is right;)
you can just cut the springs down to the correct length!
i pretty much only use Mugen springs nowadays but when i used Kyosho too some were OK & others had to have the ends nipped off;)
