so she won't start....

Since I'm still new to this, what are some culprits? Is there a "Tree of Troubleshooting" I should follow??

RE: so she won't start....

Yah if it wont start and I KNOW the engine has been run before I ususally make sure the glow charger is charged/glow plug works. Make sure fuel is going into the carb(pull off air filter and watch it go in) and I make sure the carb is at factory settings.

Hi there M8

Make sure the Air Filtter is clean as a low Air flow into the engine will stop it from starting. Spent a long time trying to get mine going untill I changed the Air Filtter over for a clean one. Then it started on the secound pull ;)

Check that flywheel turns the piston over when you turn it by hand (should be able to feel and hear it turning over).

Check for Air Leaks / fuel leaks.

Check Glow plug (new plugs can be deffective so dont just try one try at lest two).

Check one way barring as I have been told if it starts to go, it will sound like it is turnning the engine over. But it is only doing half a cycle so the engine dosnt get the compressoin it needs to start.

Okay, can I screw anything up by pulling the start cord a million times?

RE: so she won't start....

is the engine turning over when you pull the pull start ?

RE: so she won't start....

It cranks but doesn't turn over. I can pull the hell out of it fast and I get no love. Prior to this I had ran it about 10 minutes easy and hard. It also dies if I put it at WOT off a standstill.

RE: so she won't start....

is it a new engine ?

When you pull the pull start can you hear the engine turning over but not starting ?

RE: so she won't start....

no and yes

RE: so she won't start....

When you have been pulling the pull start and it dose not start have you taken the glow plug out and looked to see if any fuel is in the engine ?

Also try and put a few drops of fuel in through the glow plug hole and replace glow plug and try and start her up.

Ok first of all get the buggie and check the flywheel. Turn it by hand if it turns freely then you have a big problem. This is what happend to my first engine when that happened.

RE: so she won't start....

not yet, but I will. Now let me get this right, the glow plug produces the heat required to create the combustion vs. the spark from a sparkplug??

RE: so she won't start....

Nitro engines run a bit like diessle engines

you need fuel, Air, Compressoin and heat

FireStorm-GA- 06-23-2004 05:59 PM

RE: so she won't start....

ok you need to check that fuel is getting to the engine

hmm, well I ordered a Sullivan Tiger Drive starter Monday so no more pull starts soon...

I have a rotor start but still keep my pull start as a backup lol.

My guess is your not priming it correctly.

Now if your glow sticks charged, the plug is fine and you've primed the engine then is should start.

Now you've admitted to being a noob and I hope this doesn't in sult but here is a check list for you.

1 Take out glow plug and test it on the end of the glow sick. It should glow orange (if it's wet it will hiss)

2 With the plug out block the exhaust hole and pull the cord a few times till a mist of fuel comes from the plug hole.

3 Refit the plug loosely apply the glow start and try to start the engine.

4 If it fires up the remove the glow stick and tighten the plug. (Carfull here as the plug may pop out if your not quick enough, but dont panic and rush and it may cause glitching of the servos as the metal objects touch.

5 If it doesn't fire, Then you either have a worn out piston or a tuning issue. So does it make a poping sound when you turn the engine over or does it lock up and get so tight you cant pull the string?

Let us know and then that will guide us down the right path.

Well it turns out I was screwing with the low speed needle and it needed adjusting and started right up. Stiil learning...
