Best engine below $200?

I'm looking for a good back up engine to my WS7II. I'm trying to find a good econo engine below $200. Curious as to what everyone is using and what they think the best deal for that price would be?

RE: Best engine below $200?

Ofna Picco Comp @ $135, its usually $180+. Ofna has discontinued them so they are dumping the remaining stock.
When the engine dies or needs rebuilding, Ofna will exchange the Comp with an equal grade/value/performance engine for $65 and I suspect the replacement engine will cost well over 2 bills retail. Basicly its a 2 for 1 sale IMO, $135 for the first, $65 for the second equals $200 and I'd say the Comp is AS CAPABLE as
your S-7II.

Really? Ofna offers the swap out program on there Picco Motors? I thought it was only for the Force and Hyper lines. And is it a complete new swap or just whatever needs rebuilding on the inside?

RE: Best engine below $200?

According to an Ofna rep, they will exchange the discontinued Ofna Picco engines (Ofna line ONLY-Sport,Comp, and 0-1) IF they can not rebuild it due to parts shortages (picco discontinued making replacement parts long ago and Ofna is all but out of replacement parts now, you do the math), then they will replace it with an equally performing engine from there new Picco (? line, not yet released) upgraded line for $65.

That is my understanding but you'll need to read the FINE print.
It was posted in the ofna.com message board for a while.

I've been saying all along, dollar for dollar, no engine can touch the Ofna Picco line without a $100 head start. These engines ROCK!!!!!

RE: Best engine below $200?

I tried my buddies maxx with a picco .26 in it... damn that was nice...dunno how he fit it either... we have races down our street... 2 maxxes, a nitro sport, street force, and my cheap little pede I used to have, electric... now that I have the Ultra LX w/ that XTM 24.7, I come in at least 2nd of 5... behing the street force.... that thing does 60MPH... the ultra does about 50 +/-, one maxx does 45 another does about 40 and nitro sport does 35MPH... my pede only did about 33 MPH when I had it.... cheap electric... even though I still race them... yea Mini-t's!

The sportwerks .21 engine is around $180, and will be cheaper when guys start ripping up Mayhem kits on Ebay. The engine is made by SH, and from what I have heard will fill in nicely for your WS7 as a back up.

I would say that any variation of the Picco 26 will be a good bang for the buck. Should be around $150-$170 on Ebay.

Cheers

I'd like to say that in a recent race we had... A guy with a Sportwerks .21 in his MBX5 bested everyone in the A-mains wherein competition included JPRacing, Novas, Sirios and V-Specs...

I would go a touch more and get a RB s7. that would be the perfect spare engine in my book.

RE: Best engine below $200?

Guys,

By spare engine, I think he means bargain price, and I think he means legal displacement of .21.

RE: Best engine below $200?

Thanks for all your suggestions. I ended up going with Ofna Picco Comp http://acehardwarehobbies.com/2.2/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=108_115_168&products_id=251 7 mainly because of the price cut $60 but I've heard a few good things about these motors and I'd say for the money, it'd be tough to beat.

RE: Best engine below $200?

IMO, nothing can compete with them dollar for dollar. It really bummed me out to hear they where discontinued.

SKYLINE350GT 09-09-2004 08:21 PM

RE: Best engine below $200?

Why are bummed man? The New Picco P7-R is most likely gonna be priced around $239.

motionmachine 09-10-2004 07:31 AM

RE: Best engine below $200?

Im not bummed anymore, I can exchange them (6 engines) for an equal quality/performing new OP engine if parts aren't available.

What is the P7-R replacing as compared to the old OP line?

RE: Best engine below $200?

I noticed on the Ofna engine I got it has a boost bottle port. What is that? Is that something I can run without? Has anyone had any experience with these?

SKYLINE350GT 09-15-2004 09:46 PM

RE: Best engine below $200?

either plug it or run it. Don't leave it open or you'll fry your motor

motionmachine 09-17-2004 08:44 AM

RE: Best engine below $200?

The boost nipple under the carb should be plumbed to the nipple located on the backing plate/boost chamber.
I suggest you use a seperate boost bottle for more chamber volume, this also removes unneccessary engine heat from the intake charge.

In simplist terms, a boost bottle/chamber rearranges the existing power over a larger rpm band thus smoothing out the power spikes.
