If you fit a 2 speed in the Hyper you shouldn't take it off-road.

are they really that fragile?

my understanding was that if u were goin to be doing a lot of jumps then a 2 speed is a bad idea. im gonna get me a 1/8 in the near future just for bashing, and was going to fit a 2 speed. depends on how hard/type of bashing i guess - if i was doin a lot of jumps, i would probably lock 2nd gear out, and change the pinion. at least that was the plan. is this not a good idea then?

The problem with these 2speed kit are the dust, it doesn´t last long if you´re going for off road tracks.

2 spds do fine off road. Just most people do not put them in 1/8 scale buggies.
