Problem with my Mayhem
 

My Mayhem has worked fine since i bought it until about a week ago. It started dying mid run and the clutch bell wouldn't turn freely. I took the engine off and inspected the clutch. It looked fine and the clutch bell turned freely when the engine was dismounted. When i reinstalled the engine the problem came back. I called tech support and the guy that answered said something to the effect of "I have no idea" and "I don't know what to tell you". I called back and talked to a different guy and he sent me a new set of clutch shoes. Do the clutch shoes sound like the problem or is it something else?

The early models of the Mayhem did have problems with the clutch shoes.Check the springs also,one or more may be broken.I had to re-tighten my motor mount screws one day.The ones on top loosen occasionally too.Making setting the gear mesh impossible.

The clutch and springs are fine but the thing still won't start. It's also lunging forward when I try to use the roto start. Any ideas?

Still sounds like the clutch to me...also did you change out the plug. That could be part ofthe problem.

You said you changed out the shoes....did you change out the springs as well? If you ran it for a short while while the clutch was giving you a problem the springs will heat up excessively and loose their strength i.e. ability to hold the shoes down until the motor builds more revs. If you didn't, that's probably the prob'. Springs will typically need to be replaced at the same time the shoes are replaced for best performance.

I never changed out the shoes or springs because they were in good shape. I've only had it for a month now and less than a gallon of fuel has gone through it. Do clutch shoes and springs wear out that fast?

If the shoes ever start dragging due to weak springs it will cause excessive heat within your clutch bell and the springs wll definitely go weaker to the point to where they won't hold the shoes down even at low rpm's. It should be very difficult to pry your clutch shoes open by hand. If you can open them easily...even just a little bit by hand it doesn't take much for them open to the point of dragging inside the clutch bell. Clutch shoes can still be in good shape for the moment but they will start wearing fast now if the springs have softened. Try MUGEN 1.0 or 1.1 springs. They are very strong and may be of much better quality than what came stock with your car. They will definitely let the engine build better revs for better low end GRUNT.
