My first Buggy...
 

Ok all, made my decision(s) mainly.. I'd like some suggestions and tips/tricks, if ya could. Yes, it'll be a racer. Here's basically what I have planned out...

These are what I plan to be using for it... Yes I know, some may hate (maybe most), well rather DISLIKE the Losi 8ight.. but I happen to like it.


If there's anything that should be changed, be it the engine, electronics, whatever.. feel free to let me know. Also, as stated, Yes, it'll be my first buggy.

at the end of the day it doesn't matter if anybody on here likes it or not!

Get a Z590 servo for throttle - it's stronger and holds up well.

And yes, good hex drviers, should be a must too...

Anyone know where ot get an On/Off switch? (lost)

And... considering this will be my FIRST kit.. how long do you guys think it'll take me to put 'er together?

Will the starter box work with it?

And.. How's the Collari .21? It looks good.. considering the .30/.32 engines from Collari are good as well.

good on/off switch

well the one i use has been very good, unfortunately its very expensive BUT has NEVER let me down in over 2 years :D

i use the KO electrical switch, its water, dust & Vibration proof & even has a battery checking facility;)
it also has a built in charging lead!

conventional switches have moving parts & contacts that always eventually fail! the KO switch connects electronically so there are no moving parts or contacts to fail & as you turn it on or off by pressing & holding a button in for a couple of seconds it can't be switched off by accident ;)
how many times have you seen cars land from a big jump only for the inertia of landing to turn the car off!
this is usually only in a vertically mounted switch with the on postion upwards :eek:

if you must use a conventional switch then get a heavy duty one from a shop that sells stuff for Helis ;)
those guys have a large investment up there in the air & wont risk it using an inferior switch!

i originally bought my KO switch for my Heli but sure am glad it ended up getting used in my buggy :D
i'll never use a std type switch again, i know they seem expensive but think of it as a buy it once type of decision, fit & forget ;)

well its not a Heli switch but that was the reason i bought it, at the time i wouldn't have even contemplated spending £30 on a switch for my buggys [:'(]

BUT i needed a switch in a hurry & it was fitted & its been in use ever since ;)

apparently they have a near zero failure record which is about as good as you can get, obviously they are electrical & electrical parts can fail but these are as close to fit & forget as you can get for that application!

i break the mounting tabs off mine & just RTV it to the side of the radio box, i did use araldite (twin pack glue) but it breaks due to vibration RTV sealant stays flexible & can be safely removed if needed ;)

looks like you get them in dollars for what we pay in pounds :(

For your engine the Collari .21's are awsome so is the p5x, but they are a ton of motor. Being you are new to 1/8th scale i would recomend some thing with less power. The os .21 rg is very competitive on a tight track, and great for a new driver. When you feel comfortable with the buggy you can bump up to a nicer motor, and you will have a nice spare just incase.

Kind of agree on the engine. Get a cheap one for paractice for a simple reason -- you can run it hard without being afraid of burning up a $$$$ mill.
If you're new to RC cars or buggies I think the best way is to drive A LOT.
My first was a RG and I didn't care what happened to it really. I just let it rip tank after tank after tank. I just wanted to learn how to drive.

Actually.. I have 2 other Nitro RCs... This will be my first kit and my Buggy. Higher $$ motors, are really no prob.. I don't know if I'd like to run the OS RG in the 8ight.. It doesn't seem right.. It's like a hobo in a Limo.. doesn't really mix. But ehh... yeah.. I dunno. Why would the OS RG be a better starter engine?

yep that JR one is probably a heavy duty switch with bigger internal connectors BUT its still a mechanical switch with moving parts!
the KO switch operates electronically (probably transistors, my electrical theory lessons seem so long ago now :eek:) so there are NO moving parts to get flipped accidently and NO contacts to deteriorate over time useage ;)


Futaba do a good heavy duty switch at a ver cheap price ;)

partially right. it's probably a data latch type of gate. which like evrything else in electronics is made of varoius types of transistors:)

So you guys think the 8ight will be durable? And be really competitive against the other high-end buggies out there? What do you guys think of it? Also.. anyone have OFF body shots of it? With the aluminum shock towers, and what not? The final-matrial type shots.. close ups...

I think you'd be better off with a Hyper 7 TQ Sport kit, an SH .21 6 port, and an SH pipe to go with that SH engine:)

everything else can stay...and you'd have less into your buggy than you would buying the 8 itself:)

Ahh god.. ok the Collari is OUTTA the question..

BUTTTTT NOW I HAVE ANOTHER ENGINE!

the MR Ninja MR21 B01 5 port! It looks awesome! Mugen claims it tops out at about 43k RPMs.. but Ill guess it actually tops out in the High 30k's ... That engine looks awesome, really... what would you guys choose?

Also... I'd rather choose a higher end pipe.. any suggesitons? Thanks..

Who died and made you adam drake? "These are too inferior for me!". :eek: Pffffft. And good luck using a Z650 for steering!:) Should handle like a stock savage 25.
