Clutch problems
 

I just recently bought a new engine, and put it in tonight. When i go to pull the pullstart it wants to spin the wheels, and when i roll it on the ground you hear a grinding sound and you feel some restriction, doesnt roll freely like it should. i took the motor back out and noticed that i missed a washer, put that in and it was working fine, started it and went through the first part of the break in. then went to pull it again and started doing it again. Did i install something wrong? something need to be adjusted?

XTM XT2, and its the stock clutch.

I'm not familiar with the XTM's but it sounds to me like a clutch spring is weak ,broken or over streched, or the clutch bell is shimmed to tight, they need room to expand for heat.

Can the screw on the end of the clutch bell be too tight? or does it need to be as tight as you can get it? this is my first engine swap by the way.

You want the screw that holds the clutch bell on to be nice and tight, but it has to be shimmed just perfect to allow the clutch bell to spin freely. If you physically pull/push the clutch bell back and forth there should be just about half a millimeter or so of play. More or less and it will start to bind. If this is all perfect and you still face problems, make sure you've seated the engine properly and tightly. I had the engine mount move on my XTM once after a not-so-hard smack and everything went out of kilter and started to bind. If it's still a problem, then i'd suggest looking at the diffs and all the bearings in the diffs and the wheel hubs.

Do you have any close up pics of the area you think could be causting the problem? That could help us quite a bit.

Everything was fine before i changed engines, thats why i think maybe i installed something wrong in the clutch or something needs to be adjusted.

Take the clutch bell off and make sure the bearings are good. Im betting either you dont have the springs installed right, or that one of them has broken. You should have to put quite a bit of pressure on the clutch shoes by hand to pull them up if the springs are on right. Im sure it is just a simple problem. Just shim it to where it has a little play, but not too much when you put it back together, and try it again if it all checks out. If the clutch bell sping free, and the shoes arent falling apart from being worn out, and the springs are on right, you shouldnt have a problem.

Flywheel nut may have came loose.
Take the clutch apart and find out.
This will drive you nuts if its the case.
It will allow everything to come forward and bind up !

Trust me, this is probably the culprit.
Thread lock it too!

I had a similar issue with my OFNA ultra MBX comp, turned out to be a bad clutch spring was bining up the works.

I took the engine back out, and loosened the screw holding the clutch bell on just the slightest bit, and it came out of it, the clutch bell spins like it should. So would that mean its not shimmed enough? I also put some locktite on that screw. I mean i didnt turn it very much at all, maybe an 1/8-1/4 of a turn.

That means you need to take out 1 or 2 shims. Its too tight and causing it to bind. I would take a shim or 2 out, and tighten it back up and see how it acts. Its best if you tighten the crank bolt all the way.

Seeing how it used to work, I'm not sure shimming (i.e. purchasing a shim-kit, etc.) isn't a band-aid solution. When you install your flywheel, you must make sure the tapered cone is all the way back on the crankshaft, then install the flywheel and the nut. You need to pull on the end of the crank (away from the engine) when you slide the cone and then the flywheel on. If you don't, the flywheel can tighten against the cone with a small space behind the cone. This space is needed up front for your CB to spin freely.
