Need input on over the top, ridiculous engine...
 

Building a little fun project buggy, a RedCat Hurricane XL. It came with most of the alumiunum parts already, and the rest of the upgrade parts are on their way.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ades_smile.gif With the project, I'm trying to keep it simple, no custom parts. Love to swap in a 3-speed drivetrain, but not for now.

What I need help with, is engine choice. I obviously want a something over the top. I was a click away from buying a Cen 7.7, before I wised up and decided to make sure it would fit. It won't, it uses smaller (18mm) mounting holes (like Ofna's), not the standard big block size. The Savage .46 is out because of it's dumb side exhaust, that I would never find a header for buggy use.

Anyone have ideas on like just some massive motor? .40+ or larger?

A good .21 like my modified JPX 21 would absolutely make mincemeat out of any of the bigger engines your describing....

I'd take a look at http://www.clockworkracingengines.com/ A+ customer service and support. Great performance. Their modified Werks B6 is one of the best engines available.IMO

5.5HP at 8,000RPM mean engine there, they eat john deer tractors all day.:D:)

anyhow, 5.5hp..... more like 3 if that, people over rate engines so much, mainly because who is going to have a rig just to prove them wrong? HP isnt everything, alot has to do with power band, big engines have more torque at low rpms, smaller engines have more torque and power higher up. the JPX .21 is FAR stronger than my .28, off the line and up in rpm's if it was modded i doubt any stock engine would even come close to the power output.

correct you are,horsepower doesnt mean much,its all about torque
My MGT was a heavy ******* and that 8.0 had power to spare,would filp the truck in foward and reverse on take off

horsepower specs were advertised by A/E,regaurdless of its rating its a cheap badass basher engine and is backed by the manufacture,they replave most parts for free

Redlined, I appreciate the MGT 8.0 suggestion. The only problem is the same as Cen 7.7. For whatever reasons, both Associated and Cen decided to make the mounting hole distance (same side) 17mm, and not the standard big block size of 21mm. I have an Ofna Force .25 that is 17mm and doesn't work. Nothing would tickle me more, then to be able to bolt in either that AE or the Cen, but they unforrunately don't fit.


I also greatly appreciate every else's input. Perhaps I should have more descriptive about the buggy project, and that might help explain myself. The point of this buggy really isn't to go fast. The buggy will feature mostly aluminum parts, lower arms, upper arms, hubs, wing mounts, etc, everything RedCat has available to add. That's basically going to make the buggy a pig, and it's going to be mostly for show. I definitely will use it some, but if I wanted to go fast, I'd use one of my Mugen buggys.....

The original appeal of the Cen 7.7 was visual impact. At slightly over 5" tall, that thing is huge. Just for additional reference, I have a set of Ofna 17mm shocks on the way. Not cause they're the best, I'm sure Losi/Kyosho/Mugen shocks are better, it's just they're the biggest I could find.

I would just pick an engine and use the motor mount supplied in the truck that the powerplants comes from,when I mocked my 8.0 in my hyper7 PBS I had the mgt motor mount on the motor,it's as simple as drilling holes.the harder part was the exhaust,the hypers use rear exhaust engines and the mgt 8.0 is a side exhaust,it's a nodded airplane engine

You should look at www.shengines.com SH Engines are what Redcat already use. Losi also has used them, and you can buy one on Ebay for about $80 USD. SH P28 http://cgi.ebay.com.au/SH-28-RC-Nitr...item519662854f

I have used a few, and they are AWESOME value for money. The particular one there on ebay is a SH.28-P6 very very strong internals and really perform well. With only minor modifications Porting and crank timingetc which is also heaps of fun), these will rip up hard, and at that price, you can afford to buy a few to experiment with...( thats what I did XD ). This particular engine is used by NANDA Racing and also Exceed MADBEAST, as well as Redcat and Seben racing. This engine will give a HPI 4.6 a run for its money in stock form.

The MGT 8.0 is a torque monster, but its been timed that way, and there's heaps you can do to get it much much better. Everyone talks about smaller engines being better, but thats only because more time andattentionhas been invested in those classes of engines as larger classes of vehicles have only properly started to enter the race scene in the last few years. But really, the larger engines (.28) are starting to get up there in a huge way.At the end of the day, ittotally depends on how the engine has been timed.

For value for money,If you wanted value, thengo with an SH engine, otherwise an Associated LRP .32 is a huge-ass ball-tearer. They are similar price to any performance engineincluding the 8.0. I'd totallygo for the LRP .32 if it were me. If you wanted a "Tractor / Truck Semi" engine, then the 8.0 would be it. Dont forget though, you have to find out which gearbox youre using, which will determine where you want the rpm designto be, as you could endup with a slow vehicle.

anything will fit with a little effort and attention to detail. hole placement is a non-issue if you have a drill and the right size drill bit.
