Default 2nd project - Airboat/tunnel hull

Well its the middle of summer and I have decided to try to build an airboat again. My first airboat was doing so fine untill it flipped and sank[sm=drowning.gif]. I recovered most of the electronics:
the hull design somewhat ressembles a catamaran or sailboat hull chopped in half. I cut it out of two pine 2x4s (yes the stuff that you build houses out off!) with my band saw and have done some routering and hand finishing. The final product weighs less than 1 pound!
I will connect the two hulls with a hunk of wood that will house the electronics.
Please tell me what you think. I will paint the hulls sometime and probably seal them with Polyurethane. The paint scheme? I don't know yet, IDEAS ARE APPRECIATED!

Very nice thought . ( actually , think its great )
The only thing I am questioning is the use of the BIG pne ?
Might have tried a foam base , covered with balsa . Think the weight , even though you say its less than a pound , might be a bit too heavy . ( not really sure , since you did not say the dimensions of it )
But the idea is a GREAT one .
I believe you going after kinda like the catamaran sailboats , is that correct ?
Again , good idea , and PLEASE , make sure to keep us updated with pics and progress .
( worse come to worse , if the electronics can't handle it , don't give up on her , toss on a nitro and see what happens )

I will keep you updated but will be in Florida for 11 days. might want to try out a real airboat for myself. the hulls are 1'8" long and 3.5'' wide. the motor is a big question for me- it came from a Black&Decker weed trimmer but provides massive wind with the Master Airscrew prop. I am currently routering out the electronics platform.

Why not wood
You are doing a grate job exhalent woodworking, i would not paint it at all but stain it maybe i like the wood look. If that wood is dried out it can be vary light and way stronger then foam and you can use polyester resin on it instead of epoxy so far i think he has spent about $0.00 on the hull just a lot of work keep it up looks grate

Oh yes, I almost forgot about the resin! I have a can of it somewhere and as I come to think of it, it is a better chioce! the problem with staining the wood is that when my contracter (well, I didn't really hire hime, my parents did) dropped it of at our house, it had massive dents and imperfections so i used wood putty to fill in the cracks and dents. with the wood putty, the stained peice would look UGLY. You are right about the wood- it is dried out and 100% FREE. Why not foam? Easy answer: I don't have any! The woodworking skills run in my family, so does the equipment - but thanx for the compliment. I rarely get them from my family that expects more from me (I'm 14)

one side of the hull weighs 7 ounces... that should be light enough[sm=omg_smile.gif]
the electrtonics weigh 1 pound... that should come out to about 2-2.5 pounds for the whole thing.

For a 14 yr old .... you have talent !
And GOOD ideas !
For that size hull , under a lb is GREAT !
And I am familiar with those EP weedeaters. Another good choice , because , yes , they DO have amssive amounts of torque and probably could spin a good size prop over very easily .
Kudos to your thoughts ... they are VERY good for someone your age .
Some food for thought :

I made an EP airboat using a REALLY kick ***** electric engine and its ESC ( came out of one of those electric Raxor style scooter thingys . I used the throttle control and did a slight modification on it so it operated from a standard servo , and use the motor and instead of the two gel cel batts that was used in the scooter , I went with two small wet cell motorcycle batts and put it all on a 4 1/2 foot ( length ) airboat and am still testing different props ( considering this motor and setup was used to move a human being at speeds of up to 30 mph and weighing a max of 185 lbs ..... its kinda hard judging what size/pitch prop to use )
Largest I used to date - was a 24X10 ( APC hub style ) and it STILL was not near enough .

Hey, thanks. I'm Russian(I beleive in ZERO maintainance and hellish conditions[sm=punching.gif]) and have been building stuff like this since I was 5 years old, so practice makes perfect.
Well back on topic, I have just came back from Florida and will hopefully finish the electrics compartment by tommorow.
While in Florida, I had to 'babysit' my cousins so to spend the time, I made these with my pocket knife and some palm branches:

Chow!
PS the boats are all functional![sm=49_49.gif]

Your definitely gifted with talent and skill!!!! [8D][8D]

Where were you in Florida? Wish I knew you were in my home state, we could have possibly gotten together and had some fun!

The palm tree boat is a work of art! And the fact that its functionable is even more impressive!! Can you get us some vids of it in action?

Hey man, don't get me started. I have made boats out of cheap Wallmart rc cars! now I am designing the 'cockpit' (or cover) of the elec. compartment. I have Linux on my computer so I don't have CAD and that makes it very complicated. BTW, do you have any pics of that crazy boat you were talking about? sure would be cool to see it.

well, not exactly one of yours, preferrably two or more! Ok I have finally finished Elec. compartment so here it is.
It weighs 1/4 of a pound (without electronices)

Nice work on the compartment!
Did you do all the work yourself?

As with all of my creations, I take pride in making every part by myself, even if it takes me a month. The Elec. compartment was one of the easiest that I have made in this project. I have a handheld router that is very easy to use and 4 years of experience.

Selph inflicted: you sure do have some wild ideas! the lazer cut boat has given me a good start for my 3rd airboat (It's still on graph paper).

I am having trouble making cockpit are so please give me time, (I have already trashed 3 2x6 hunks of wood) but am close to completing a fourth.
will post progress...

Well, I have finished the rear part of the Elec. cover. It will be glued to the compartment and will not open. I have made it so it will contain the battery while still allowing me to take it (battery) out for recharging. I have done the easy part, now I will try to work out a seal for the removabe front part of the cover. Making it look cool is a whole different challenge...[sm=lol.gif]

I am STILL in the process of redesigning the cockpit. Meanwhile, I aquired a Trinity CO 27 Monster pro motor. It has been dyno'd and can put out 20684 rpm @ 5volts and has 95Nmm of torque. If my Black & decker motor fails or isn't fast enough I can just drop that baby in and see what happens!!!

...Oh yeah, I just got this crazy idea into my head... Why not drop in a few LEDs?...

whatever... it is way past my bedtime...[sm=sleeping.gif]

I plan to have a water rudder, not the conventional air rudder used on air boats. here are my reasons:
1. a water rudder is easier to mount and is more astheticly pleasing
2. a water rudder allows sharper turns and quicker reactions
3. IMO a water rudder is easier (and faster) to make

here are my designs

Thanks for the compliment! I like to be original in my designs. I still have some "funky" boat designs running in my head that I want to do in the future.
Due to this currently being just a hobby for me, I don't have the desired time that I wish I had for the airboats.....thats going to change in the future. [8D][8D] Been really busy with work and family lately....they come first.

Glad my 3 pointer could be of some inspiration to you for your future projects. I see that you have a creative side to you.....can't wait to see what you come up with! I admire your skills and talent. Especially for your age! Keep up the good work!!

Well you know, my mom wants to keep me away from the TV so I have gobs of free time where I can just sit around in my workshop all day with no one bothering me. Being a kid is great...

PS my next desing is probably going to be a 3 pointer/airboat/hydroplane which means I have to beg my dad to buy me a brushless motor!!!

Good news, the cockpit is turning out great, should be finished by monday!!! Oh I can't wait!!!
