Default Big swamp buggy with SuperTigre G90 ?

I'm going to build Dumas big swamp buggy this winter. I was planning to buy a .61-size SuperTigre, but I noticed that the .90-version weights the same, has the same external size and doesn't cost much more. Are there any reasons not to get the .90?

90 it is then. I can always keep the throttle down if I want to.

Bard:

I just purchased my Super Tigre 90 on Friday from my LHS. Just and FYI as you build your engine stand, the stand is not wide enough (almost) to accomodate the engine bolts sticking down through. They hit on the 1/2x1/2 mahogany beams at the top. If you haven't already put the engine stand together, consider narrowing the two top mahogany beams just a little to accomodate the bolts. I am thinking 1/32 or 1/16 on each side approximately. Mine are already epoxied and I am going to use the Dremmel tool now. You will also need to narrow two of the three 3/8" ply engine mounts as they hang over the top on both sides with this wide engine. I still think it is a good choice. Here are a couple of pix of my engine just sitting on the stand. I do not have the bolts down through the mounting flange or the motor would not fit up there.

Now my question is how far fore or aft to mount the engine.

Some will tell you use the method like regular water propped boats , but this does not always work well .
What I do , is when I get all the components ready , I set them in place ( minus the engine ) . I try marking a straight line ( water line ) with the hull on a table and use one those erasable markers that wipes off with a dab of water . Then I set the hull in the the water to make sure the hull sets flat to the line drawn for the water line . I adjust the location of the engine as needed so the hull sits flat in the water . ( yes , you could also simply adjust the angle of attack of the prop , but , I find doing it this way , saves a LOT of time and porpoising . Then , if you DO need to re-angle your engine , it will ONLY be such a minute' amount .
Also , for your problem of the engines mounting holes lining up , rather than start whipping out the dremel , why not make some "L" brackets ( aluminum would be best ) and then no alterations would need be done to your engine stand .

Bob:

What is porpoising exactly and with respect to the BSB specifically, what effect does the thrust angle have relative to the engine position?

This project didn't progress as planned for me. Tower Hobbies ran out of engines and I moved on to other projects.

Anyway. I gathered all the necessary parts a few weeks ago and finally started building today. There is a nice retro feel to the kit, definitely not RTR. [sm=regular_smile.gif] I like it.

How much do you think your big swamp buggy will weigh with the ST G90?? Just curious as I am building a round nose hydro boat, plan on using a G90 also for the same reasons, same size and weight as its little brothers. Kinda wondered if I was overdoing it, my boat is 18.5 X 39". Not sure of size of a Big Swamp Buggy. Good luck on your build. I just ordered the G90 from Tower so they are back in stock.

Meant to mention that my boat should weight around 8-8.5# AUW. Its at 6 now with out the engine, but all fiberglassed, just need to add a coat of paint and some details.

I just broke in my G-90 last sunday, with a apc 13x6 prop, it is a very powerful engine, It blew my mind. in fact my 36 inch 6 pound
foamy does a back flip at just under 1/2 throttle, so whats a guy to do, build a bigger 43 inch hull of course... I hope it works better.

I have a 13/6 MAS scimitar on my big Uproar, with G90 and it loves that prop. Tried a 14/6 and 13/7 but 13/6 just seems to make the engine happy. Plan on trying a 12/8 soon.

I don't know anything about the weight. I don't realy know anything about airboats. I'm just building it and hope it works.

That is precisely where I am-know nothing about air boats, just wanted to take advantage of lake close by and flying field is 42 miles away-also something for G-sons to do when they come this summer. Plus I just like to build stuff.

Tell me about it-on my second air boat and first one has not been in water yet-going to try it out tomorrow-can't wait to get the Miss Take version finished and try out that G90 on it. Adjustable engine stand came out nice. If I can figure out how to downsize some pics will try to post some later. Hope I am not dissapointed. air boats are so much cheaper than scale planes, if they are just close to being as much fun, I am in deep trouble. They are perfect for experimentation without putting up my first born as collateral.

Anyone have a good free download for fixing pics so they can be posted.

Thanks Crispy-will give it a try when I take some pics-by the way, foghorn was my all time favorite cartoon. They had some classics.
