Engine Mounting Advice
 

Gday guys.

Building an Air boat out of Coro-plus. The Hull is 55cm long and 34cm wide.
Im planing on mounting a OS LA46 on the back. I think the engine is a little bit big for the hull size,
but i'm up for a bit of a challenge.

Now for the question-
Im up to making the engine stand. Im planing on making it out of some
3mm ply than fiberglass around out. than bolt it to a sheet of ply, than Glue
the sheet of ply to the bottom on the hull.

What would be the best way about mounting the engine stand to the hull?
Is Ply and fiber glass the best way to make the engine stand, or should it be made out of some alloy, if so,
how would i mount it.

Doubling the 3mm ply would make a better stronger stand
with a hull that narrow you may be to top heavy with a 46 on top of it
instead of turning it will just flip [:-]
don't just glue the motor stand in PUT SCREWS IN IT

The engine vib's will break the glue lose from the coro & you will have a runaway
mess

How would you say i got about screwing the engine stand to the hull?
Have you Screwed your engine stand to your deck?

Midget,

You definitely want to secure the motor pylon to the deck with a fastener. I personally would use blind nuts instead of screws. Screws will loosen up also under vibration over a period of time. And if you over tighten them, they will come out even sooner.

Use blind nuts with a thread locker on them. This will keep them from coming loose on you. The last thing you want is your pylon assembly coming off the main deck.

I would also put a small piece of thin ply under the coroplast also. This will make it harder to pull through the coroplast. In other words, sandwich the coroplast between the ply's.

I drilled the holes and bolted the stand the the hull...
Seems strong enough...

You're making progress! Can't wait for vids.:D

If the mount doesn't hold, you could use the existing hull and mount a wooden deck to it that the motor mount can screw or bolt to.

Yeah, It seems fairly strong...Only one way to find out i guess hahah.

I'm gonna make the rudders/rudder tonight-
I was gonna make twin rudders, but its going to be harder to connect them both up and stuff.
So Dose it make a difference in steering with only one ruder?

Also...Would a 6oz fuel tank be big enough???

The motor pylon looks strong enough, but like you said, only one way to find out.

Not into nitro engines much, but I would think a 6 Oz tank on a .46 should give about 10 - 15 min of run time. I have a .61 with a 12 Oz tank that runs about 25 Min. Keep the pics coming and don't forget a vid of the first run.

ok just a little update.

The mount is now fully mounted to the hull...Seems really strong.
I got the fuel tank (6oz)
I got a spinner for the prop, (Figured out that I can't hand start a new engine lol)
And just made the rudder...Do you guys think it is to big or to small???
Also I'm not to sure how to link it all up to the servos.

Well Guys...
Here's the end result, I dunno if it's gonna work or if it will brake straight away lol.
But either way, Ive learned a lot from this build...What not to do, and what to do.
And i worked out that it only cost me $25 to build, for the cable and fiberglass.

I'm gonna run this puppy in tomorrow, Just give it a run on the grass...See if it runs
or is gonna brake lol - But ill get a video.

try keep it light i have had problems with adding weight to mine

its its too heavt it be slow and the handling be terrible !
