The Southern Gentlemen hosted the NATS one year and one Robert Finley opened his mouth and said "If these lesser boaters will quite running then we will have more time for record runs" WHEWWWWWW Fred McBroom and Jim Alexander immediately went to the badge store and had "Lesser Boater" Badges made... It was then decided that whomever made a huge boo boo like forget to turn on the radio etc they would indeed be endowed with one of these badges... Finley actually tried to hit the island with his boat to get the badge thing over with and the judges said Nooooooooo you missed the island.. We actually ended the NATs with an Around the island race as I had given it a whirl with my Hustler during a heat race and made it and won the heat lol No clue who won that race but I have never laughed harder in my life....

Ackerman speaks the TRUTH!!
I was there and was Contest Director for that INTERNATS (1977) in Hammond, LA
I think Ackerman got the award for the "around the island race"?
This island was about 100 yds offshore and was probably 150' x 50'. It had trees on it, so you could not see the complete island and could not visualize how wide it was!!
The island race started on a dare. Someone took the dare and made it around.
The island event was dreamed up afterwards. I did not make it around the island (with an old boat, thank God!). <grin>
Attached below 30 yr old photos show island (outlined in photos)

The problem with the island was once the boat went behind it all sound stopped so I told Finley to count to something but then someone down at the right end said "there it is!" and I heard them so I gave the transmitter a little right and low and behold my boat appeared.. We had a straight away prop on it and Finley said "go!" and I came by that start finish line at probably eighty when the rest of the boats were going forty and won the heat lol lol lol Let's see.... Leonard Skweira forgot his wifes birthday and she locked him out of his motel room lol.. Another room had three of it's four walls litterally almost to the ceiling full with cases of beer. Finley stuck his hand in his own twins props. (no lesser boater badges had been invented yet). I hit a cat fish running straight a way with my Hustler and Jimmy Fetters came in with the retrieve boat he had a cat fish I had hit with the turn fin so he immediatly cleaned it and dumped it on the barbeque and that was dinner lol. It was a NATs to remember lol

I loaned my boat to Connie Cupit (Glen's Son) for the "around the island race".

I also remember loaning him my 20 hydro for the Indy Unlimited one year (can run anything) and he finished 3rd overall with a 20 boat against twins, etc. What a driver he was....

Marty,
Thanks so much, for your continued compliments to me and Connie!
I sincerely appreciate (appreciated) them. You ARE and ALWAYS have been, a "class guy" in my opinion.
I have ALWAYS valued your technical expertise and opinion and considered you a friend.
And . . . we have only seen each other ONCE in 30 years!
Best Regards,
Glenn

John, Your mention of beer and motels reminded me of a race in Naples when Pinkert and I had a few too many. A bunch of us were staying in a motel on the beach and Pinkert and I decided to play chicken by cranking up our 40 hydros and throwing them into the Gulf of Mexico headed toward Mexico. To make it worse it was a dark moonlit night and all we could see were the rooster tails. After about 15 seconds we sobered up and turned them around. Both returned safely (and salty) to shore. Jay

Guys,

I speak with Stu Barr upon occasion. He is still building the Crapshooter boats. All the orders for 2008 are planned and suspect he is into 2009. He is still producing parts, cowls (looking to put out cowls for the MAC and CMB HR engines) and hardware. So Crapshooter Boats are alive and well. They are the hardest rigger to get your hands on, even used ones and command a steep price.

Geez, You gotta give em' credit for still having a memory...at their ages.
Ackerman?, Davis? Cupit?
Now I KNOW my social security tax dollars are going to pay for their Viagra with that group!
Why did you stop with the stories? The statute of limitations is up by now! What about Gene's crutch's thrown out the second story window of the hotel? Super glueing a hotel door shut on a unauthorized board meeting at the nationals?

I got more!!!!

James:

Not quite correct....

I sold the rights to Gregg Huey and he sold the rights to Kerry Woodward. Stu and John Barr loaned Kerry the $$$ to buy from Gregg and when he defaulted, Stu took over the name.

No offense to you but this is a nitro boat. Your best bet is to ask your question in the Electric boat forum.

WOW, even Kerry found this post....

I am still doing some racing, but sold everything to a guy who lives 45 minutes from me. All the tools, Ackerman's machinery, etc.

He lets me run stuff that I build and I mentor a couple guys. I now live in St Petersburg Florida.

Going to a big race in South Carolina next weekend Oct 11th, 2008. Will get to see a bunch of my old friends from all over.

John Bridge then president of IMPBA threw Gene Taylors crutches out the window and into the snow. Gene then crawled outside and got his crutches.. Gene then took talcum powder and super glue and glued the door to John Bridges room SHUT!.. The next morning Bridge had to break down the door to get out of his room. This was our first experience with super glue and did it work! This was all in Toledo during the Toledo show.

I think I may have gotten one of the last boats our of Tim's shop. It was a Super Sixty and at that time no one had a full cowling except those boats.

Trying to think... Joey Albanese actually delivered my boat to Indy during one of the early Indy Unlimiteds. Now camping out at the Cleveland race is a whole new story lol lol

Hi Guys,
I'm still alive & well at 71! But, no R/C boats in my life for 30+ years. <grin>
Still have my crapshooter "Snake Eyes" that I won the 1976 IMPBA Norfolk Internats with in .40 hydro. Also won the "Performance of Excellence" (high point) perpetual trophy with that boat.
Does IMPBA still present that trophy?
I'm in regular touch with Tim and John by e-mail.

Glenn, as far as I know, the trophy is still given out. I saw it once, it's big and heavy! I've probably got a shot of it somewhere on a disc.

Hi Ron,
That's the same trophy! Somewhere, I have a photo of me with it.
The winner kept it for a year and had his name engraved on it. He brought it back to the Internats the next year.
My 12 yr old son, Connie (now, 44 yr old, Conrad with his own 11 yr old son) won .19 mono at the same Internats in Norfolk.
I'm also in touch with Joey Albeanese and Ken King by e-mail. Have not seen Joey in 30 years! Saw Ken a few years ago.
Regards,

Mostly for myself but nothing fancy. The last ones I did for someone else was about 2 years ago for a guy in Wisconsin.
