Default Jolly Motor offhore boat - Wanting to scratch build.

I'd really like to scratch build one of the boats. Both to save money and for the fun of it. This model is 233cm = 91.7".

My idea of how to do it goes like this:
1. Draw the profiles of the hull in Autocad.
2. Print the profiles and cut them out in balsa or plywood.
3. Lay strips/flakes of balsa along the profiles and glue them in place. Finish it off nicely with filler/paint.
4. Put fibreglass on top of this to make a mold.
5. Make the actual hull out of Kevlar/karbon fibre in the mould.

Problems as I see it:
1. Have very little idea of the shape of the boat appart from pictures. Should have a 3D model in autocad or paper-compies of drawings of the boat..
2. Making the kevlar/karbon hull a good "compact" piece without a curing oven and pressure chamber.

Anyone have any ideas ?

PHCM

That is one BAD MUTHA!
I've seen other photos of your 'freinds' boats.
If I'm not mistaken this is a wood and epoxy boat, not an all glass hull, right?
And it's not super fast either, but it looks fast enough sitting still.
It's worth building just to sit and look at it.
Is the hardware custom?

Panza,

One option you have without using an autoclave is vacuum <sp> bagging the parts when they are in the mold.
You can heat the parts, in certain conditions and with certain products, to reduce curing time.
The equipment to do this can be costly, but certainly cheaper than an autoclave that will hold parts as large as you want to make.
Check www.fiberglast.com for composite products and supplies of all types.
If you want an awesome resource for composite fabrication try Mike James's website http://www.nextcraft.com/rcindex.html.
You can also find his knowledge in the airplane (fabrication)section of RCU.

As for plans on your cat....As soon as you find some, let me know.
In the meantime I'm going to attempt my wood-over-foam creation using the SWAG method.

SB...

My main concern about the epoxy/fibreglass/kevlar isn't curing time but to get the compaction I want. I.e. to get rid of the air bubbles that will form if the epoxy and fibres and just laid without any pressure beside brushing.

I was thinking of using a vauum cleaner and bagging the whole thing as you said.

The hardware is bought for the most part I think. There are multiple manufacturers of outdrives and such.

I think it will be fast enough with two zenoah 7.1 hp engines. I think 80mph is said to be possible.

Just wish i could get my hands on some plans... i'll let you know if/when I find some.

Did you have any luck finding some plans?

I've been working on the same, but ive done some plans up in autocad myself from the many photos available.

But would still love some if anyone has found them.

Saugling,
Awesome site, great pics.
I dug through some the site, but haven't had a chance to check out all the pictures yet.

PHCM,
What's in the book?
It's a good thing you had some page shots, you know 'You can't judge a book by it's cover'!

plb75 & Panza,
I've got plans for a simple Cat in PDF format, it's actually a MicroCat(designed by Walter Geens) that measures 36cm X 16cm but you could scale it up.
I may try building it and modify for my own satisfaction.
Let me know if you want copies.

Hey Guys,
I'm at work now but when I get home I'll get a definite price and email it to you. They're expensive but are over a hundred pages of good color photos.

Btw, the language is German.

Oh, for you twin engine guys, they have oposite wound flex shafts for your counter rotating props.

Hey Blue & others.
I'd like to apologize if I've came across in an unapropriate way.
I'm not trying to push MHZ, its a big company and represents a lot of the boats I happen to run with. Also, being since I'm here for a few more years it never hurts to try and assist my fellow brothers.

The guys at MHZ are great though. Email them in English and they'll respond back.
