Default Clear coat over the decals?

I'm new to painting boats, but I plan to add some decals, and spray it with a metallic clear coat. I'm not sure if I should clear coat over the decals, or apply them on top of the clear coat? I'd like to do about 3 coats of clear, but I'm not sure if the metallics in it will hide the decals too much? Any suggestions?

Decals are a tough call but here's my reasons for not doing it. If later on you end up by not liking them, sell the boat and the new owner doesn't like what you did then they're hard to get off.
OK, a reason why. They won't peel off.

I too prefer decals after paint/clear coats. A buddy did similar to what your asking with a pearlescent paint and it really did not impress. Plus I like the option of changing out decals later if I chose.

If it has metallic content then its not really a clear coat.

Spray the metallic paint first, then put your decals on over the top of that. Last use a clear coat over the decals to seal them. Water slide decals might get wet on a boat? Then come off unexpectadly.

To really see for sure, paint a test surface like you painted your boat. Try an area with the metallic paint under a decal and an area with it over. Which one do you like the best? That will answer your question.

Thanks for the replies! I will put the decals over the clear, for the reasons you all mentioned.
