I am in the proccess of building a model of a WWII destroyer and the hull is nearing completion. I went to the hobby store and the person there wasn't experienced with gas boats, just electric ones. I wanted to make it gas powered because electric just wouldnt be that cool. The specs on the boat are as such: it is 4' long with a 6" beam, an ~1/2" thick hull that is plywood. The hull was constructed from layers of 1/4" plywood laminated together then shaped, so it feels very light. I was wondering what size engine would be best, because i dont want to buy a $140 engine to have it not be right! I was also wondering how I should do the drive shaft and what size propeller. Do I really need a clutch? If someone who knows how i should do this could let me know, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Well the Length to width ratio makes a bit fat to be a scale Destroyer. So you will be pushing a bit more displacement than Scale. I can't imagine why you need gas, My 56" DD runs well on two 24v pittman motors and is a nice scale speed. The ferry boat which is 52" and 11" wide runs on 14v pittman motors, and it is insanely fast and out of scale in speed. These motors don't run more than 9k rpm.
But if you feel you need the Gas motor, have fun.

Thank you for the reply, I had just wanted to do a gas/nitro engine because it just wouldnt be as cool with an electric engine. So I guess that answers my question as to what size, the smallest possible especially because speed really isnt that important to me. What I have a bigger question on is on what I need to go from the engine to the propeller to do it right and not have water leaking into my boat. I guess i should have specified that that was the bigger ?.
