Default Loctite seal retainer: short shelf life?

Loctite seal retainer: short shelf life?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a tube of Loctite 640 seal retainer that I opened last November. I used it and it worked perfect. Since that time it has been tightly capped and sealed in a small zip lock bag in my hobby room inside my house.

Yesterday I used it to seal a flanged stainless steel 4x7mm bearing in an aluminum stuffing tube. Both items new, never used. After 24 hours, it is not cured and when I powered up my motor the propshaft pulled the bearing out of the stuffing tube.

Is it possible the seal retainer is old and useless at 7 or 8 months?

BTW, I have some Loctite 242 blue threadlocker that is several years old and still does the job.

No idea what the 'shelf-life' of that stuff is, but could it have gone bad? Sure. Am I sure it went bad? No, but what else could it be?

Thanks Doc. I'm just hoping someone who deals with the stuff all the time will know if it is a shelf age issue or not so that I can look at another reason for the trouble.

I've never heard of using a seal retainer being used to hold bearings in place but it might be something new to me. I have heard of using just a drop of CA to hold them in place though.

Ron, I bought some fresh Loctite #603 seal reatiner compound and it did the trick. Bearing is locked in place.
