Default Boats for kids

My soon-to-be 6 year old wants an RC boat for his birthday. I've been
looking around and it seems that there are lots and lots of boats out
there aimed at the more serious adult hobbyist and then there are the
wal-mart toys.

Long ago we realized that the cheap toys aren't worth it, but I don't want
to plunk down $100+ for a RC boat quite yet...

We're looking for an electric; gas is too much of a hassle for a 6 year old (and I don't want him to blow himself up quite yet!)

Can someone make some recommendations? Requirements are that it be
reasonably fast, fun to control, and run for a while on ordinary NiMH
rechargables. I've read some of these boats have runtimes of 3 minutes on
a charge....

I'd like something with at least 10 or 15 minutes on a charge...

You can find the Zig Zag Racer 2 for $69.99 at [link=http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/MainPage.htm]offshore electrics[/link]. If you get one for yourself, you can race, and have twice the fun!

Also if you are a Tower Hobbies Club member the 90 day warranty turns into a 180 days.

They have 3 battery packs for $24 so your run time will not be an issue since you will have 3 packs to swap with.
If you spend over $100 when you add the packs you can get $10 off the order before july 31st
and if you add a charger and hit $150 you will then get $15.00 off the order..
And free shipping on an order over $15o when you are a club member

i'd get the reef racer because it has a wheel radio. I come from cars so thats the only way i can drive.

Kids are tough on boats so both the Zig-Zag Racer or the Reef Racer would be good choices.
Compare the two to see which one better fits your needs;
ZZR, stick transmitter with a "wall wart" 110 volt charger or the RR with a wheel radio and 12 volt charger that plugs into a cigarette lighter outlet.
The nice thing about any of the boats mentioned above including the Turbo-Vee is that you can get parts if needed. With Wal-mart, Radio Shack and other department store boats that is if you need a part, forget it as you'd might as well toss it in the trash. The speeds of these boats also are much faster and better than what you'll get at one of these stores.
