Default Reef Racer 2 Reception Problem?

I just took my Reef Racer 2 out for the first run today and all was going well. But about 100 feet out it seems like the boat was loosing the Tx's signal. I press the throttle all the way down, but the boat goes, then stops, and goes, and stops. It keep doing this until I brought the boat closer to me, then the problem went away and drove smoothly. Is this normal for the RR2? I would think i would get at least 200 ft range. Or is there something wrong with my Rx? Other than that, the boat was very fun and fast. It did take on a little water, probably from going submarine a few times, though. I will have to tape it down next time.
